Heifers 1.50- 2.00 lower. Cows 1.00-1.50 lower, bulls weak to 1.00 lower. Small feeder supply 50-1.00 lower. Four day receipts 18,000 as compared 18,700 previous week and 19,400 a year ago. Slaughter steers approximately 40 percent and heifers 36 percent with a liberal percentage Choice both classes included and many of the steers in the desired 975-1150 pound weight range. Cows 11 percent, feeders 10 percent. Fed cattle prices forced downward as carcass prices declined' under increased slaughter and outlet for live cattle narrowed. The most startling development in the livestock industry since ceiling prices were imposed was an nounced late last week when Canadian authorities increased the import tariff on live cattle by 200 percent to 4.50 per hundred effective immediately. As a consequence, the heavy flow of cattle to Canadian facilities was reduced but substantially lower prices during the week served to offset a good portion of the in creased tariff. The modest volume of 1300-1500 pound yield grade 4-5 steers came under continued heavy pressure and often sold 2.00-3.00 per hundred. Below Good yield grade 2-3 Holsteins.
