44 —Lancaster Farming, Saturday, October 27, 1973 Senate Ag Comm. (Continued From Page 1) “From my experience in fighting for and obtaining lower milk prices in New Jersey, I know that Pennsylvania con sumers can save between $6O and $BO million per year on their milk bills,” Sandfort said. The statement received a favorable reception from James McHale, Pennsylvania Secretary of Agriculture, and Harry Kapleau, chairman of the Pennsylvania Milk Marketing Board. It was not so favorably received by members of the Senate ag committee, most of whom are known to oppose the lifting of controls. A number of the senators questioned Sandfort’s math, at least one openly attacked his reasoning. One objection to Sandfort’s testimony was raised by Henry Geisinger, executive vice president of the Pennsylvania Association of Milk Dealers. Geisinger said that while Louden Aerial Ladder Equipped FARM PAINTING We Spray it on and Brush It In! FOR FREE ESTIMATES CALL COLLECT 717-393-6530 OR WRITE HENRY K. FISHER 2322 Old Phila. Hill Farms stores may be charging less for milk, they are charging more for other items, and thereby not saving the consumer any money. Geisinger said he had visited Sandfort’s stores recently, and boughteight brand name items - mustard, corn flakes, soup, coffee, soap, etc. - for which he paid $3.81. He then went to a nearby chain store, bought the identical items, and paid $3.24, or 57-cents less, a savings of nearly 18 percent. Others speaking in opposition to the bill and in favor of 'the present milk marketing law included Chester Heim, representing the Pennsylvania Farmers Association, J. W. Deisley, president of Moore Dairy, Lancaster, A. J. Nixon, vice-president of Penn Dairies, Louis Galliker, Kalliker’s Dairy Products, Johnstown, and Fred Dewey, president of Harrisburg Dairies. The pro side was represented by Dr. C. W. Pierce, professor of agricultural economics at Penn IN STOCK State, and was supposed to have been represented too by Mssrs. McHale and Kapleau, who gave up their time so that the com mittee could hear testimony from the entire senior class at Abin gton Heights High School The students, from the Scranton area, spoke out against retail price fixing, and proposed a number of reasons for their stand. They had, they said, looked at both sides of the issue and come up with a logical solution. At least one observer commented that he felt the group had been unduly influenced by Sandfort and by a nutritionist from the state ag department. Pierce, in his testimony, said that price controls support ex pensive home delivery routes by keeping store prices artificially high. In-store consumers, he felt, should not be made to subsidize home deliveries. Pierce also felt that eliminating controls would not result in ruinous price wars. In general, those who opposed the present milk marketing law say that consumer prices would fall under a new law. Those who favor keeping the old law maintain that the law would work if it were properly administered. Dare to be different when it’s time to concoct a tempting sand wich!
