S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced. 614 612 606 740 3.5 4.4 3.4 641 604 However, the regulated commission merchants will still be able to serve as brokers on “puts” or “calls;" that is, they may find buyers or sellers to take the opposite side of their clients option transactions. Alex C. Caldwell, ad ministrator of the Commodity Exchange Authority, said the action is being taken to prevent registered futures commission merchants from becoming in solvent as a result of sudden demands for funds to pay option holders and thus being tempted to dip into regulated commodity customers’ funds to meet their obligations. 681 715 646 609 619 722 644 665 3.8 3.8 4.3 4.0 At a Departmental hearing last May, a CEA spokesman testified that several option dealers, who wrote option contracts on nonregulated commodities, had gone into bankruptcy when they could not pay off on “calls” in their clients’ favor. “Puts” and “calls” are options to sell or buy commodity contracts at the prevailing prices within a specified period. When the market moves up or down'the allowable daily price limit for a number of days, the option dealer can be locked in or out of the market and as a result end up with a large loss, ac cording to Mr. Caldwell. Therefore, the Department decided to restrict registered futures commission merchants to acting only -as brokers when dealing in nonregulated com modity options. The effective date of this new regulation was delayed until January 2 to give any futures commission mer chant, who is currently writing nonregulated commodity option contracts, a Chance to phase out of this type of operation. 797 640 695 652 647 624 p 76 3.8 4.0 4,5 645 631 622 611 4.1 . 648 631 “Puts” and “calls” are sometimes referred to as “privileges,” “idemnities,” “bids,” “offers,” “advance guarantees” and “decline guarantees.” 645 783 697 616 633 3.9 3.0 3.6 Percent No. Cow Days Milk Percent Cows In Milk lbs.
