Prize Cattle To Be EdM
At 17th Livestock Exposition
More than $1,000,000 in beef
cattle will be corralled within
eyeshot of the state capitol early
in November. Has the old
Chisholm Trail been reopened
and extended this far east? Nope.
It’s time for the 17th Keystone
International Livestock Ex
position, November 8-13 at the
Farm Show.
Actually if you shipped all the
cattle entries to the nearest
livestock auction they would
probably bring no more than
$350,000, even at today’s prices.
But most of these animals are
prize breeding stock from the
biggest ranches east of the
Mississippi and are valued at
many times more than a
slaughter steer.
Officials of the Pennsylvania
Livestock and Allied Industries
Association (PLAIA) and the
Pennsylvania Department of
Agriculture, co-sponsors of the
Keystone International, do not
plan to bring in a troop of Texas
Rangers to ride herd on the
cattle. “In all the years of the
exposition,” a spokesman was
quoted, “we have never had one
head rustled.”

judging will- be Saturday,
November 10. The open class
steer show gets underway at noon
culminating with the grand
champion steer selection at 3
p.m. The Junior Steer Show, for
4-H and FFA members, starts an
hour later and will run con
currently with the open classes.
The Junior Steer champion will
be in the running for overall
grand championship honors.
The steer judging is actually
the first half of competition for
market-ready animals. All of the
steers must be sold to slaughter
establishments. The best five or
six head in each of the six classes
will be consigned to a Mon
tgomery County abbatoir where
the dressed carcasses will be
subjected to an exacting
evaluation by meat experts and
another grand championship
determination. This latter prize
is worth $1,500, while the grand
champion of the live judging will
receive just $3O, a rosette and a
plaque for his efforts.
Breeding cattle will also come
under the judges scrutiny
beginning on Saturday with
Angus scheduled for an ap
pearance at noon in the Main
Arena, and the Junior Breeding
show gets underway at 3:30 p.m.
Again, competition in the Junior
Show is limited to 4-H and FFA
members. The final event of the
day is the feeder calf judging
which is accomplished by pen in
lots of five.
Sunday will see two more sets
of breeding cattle, Herefords and
Polled Herefords and the beef
cattle will close out their ac
tivities on Monday with judging
of Charolais and Shorthorn
breeding classes followed by the
annual sale of all the feeder
calves entered in Sunday’s show.
The six days and nights of the
Keystone International Livestock
Exposition includes judging in
three other species of livestock -
sheep, swine and saddle horses.

The mouth-watering scent of
barbecuing pork drifted over the
parking lot of the Manor Shop
ping Center Saturday afternoon.
The smell of barbecuing meat
came from the grills of four
contestants seeking the crown of
the Pennsylvania Pork Cookout
King.
After the charcoal smoke
cleared and the judges had tasted
their final portion, the crown
went to Abram C. Landes, of
Souderton, who represented the
Eastern Pennsylvania Pork
Producers Association. His
winning recipe of Dutch Chops
and Stuffing featured grill
browned chops topped off with
baked fruit pie filling and bread
stuffing.
The winner will now compete in
the national contest in Des

Prepare an appetizer cheese
roll a day or two in advance for
your guests to munch on before
dinner. Whip two (3 ounce)
packages of cream cheese with
two cups of shredded Cheddar
cheese and one-third cup
crumbled Blue cheese. Shape into
a roll about eight inches long, two
inches in diameter. Roll in
chopped parsley and wrap
tightly; chill in refrigerator.
