Bass said. “We figure the plans
we write cost about $lOO apiece.
They might cost less if they’re
done by private individuals.”
Once the plans are written, the
law says they must be im
plemented, and this could present
another problem - that of finding
enough conservation contractors
to install waterways, terraces,
tile lines and any other practices
called for in the plans. Bass said
he expects that contractors would
appear on the horizon if a need
suddenly developed for their
services.
Farmers could get some help
from REAP funds in paying for
conservation practices, Bass
feels. “We’re not sure yet how
much money will be available,”
he told the group, “but it could be
from 50 to 75 percent of the total
cost j)f permanent conservation
practices.”
Costs for installing con
servation practices vary with
different farms and different
farming techniques. Land in hay
is relatively inexpensive to in
clude in a conservation program.
Continuous corn land can cost as
much as $llO per acre for the
installation of all the measures
needed to control sediment
runoff.

were George Parks, from the
Pennsylvania Department of
Environmental Resources, and
Henry Hackman, executive
assistant of the Lancaster County
Conservation District. While the
Clean Streams Law prescribes
penalties for farmers who do not
comply with its provisions, Hack
man pointed out that any lan
downer with an implemented
plan will be exempt from
prosecution if pollution results
from an act of God.

serving topsoil is good farm
business, because the loss of
topsoil eventually results in the
loss of income. He also pointed
out the flooding dangers inherent
in stream beds which are allowed
to fill up with silt.

Placements of broiler chicks in
the Commonwealth during the
week ending October 13, 1973
were 1,252,000. The placements
were 8 percent above the
corresponding week a year
earlier, and 1 percent below the
previous week. Average
placements during the past 10
weeks were 10 percent above a
year earlier.
Settings for broiler chicks were
1,807,000 - 8 percent below the
previous week and 9 percent
above the comparable period a
year earlier. The current 3-week
total of eggs set is 19 percent
above the same period a year
ago.
Inshipments of broiler-type
chicks during the past 10 weeks
averaged 26,000 compared with
18,000 a year ago. Outshipments
averaged 299,000 during the past
10 weeks, 33 percent above a year
earlier.
Placements in the 21 States
were 56,555,000 - 1 percent above
the previous week and ap
proximately the same as the
same week a year earlier.
