We Are Proud T r Be A Part Of American Agriculture The American Farmer Degree, highest degree of achievement in the FFA, will be presented to 564 FFA members this year, representing the best of more than 447,000 FFA members enrolled in the nation’s 7,798 high school vocational agriculture departments. In addition to being named as American Farmer, Aaron was also named Northeastern Star Farmer. The Star Farmer of America will be announced Thursday night, chosen from the Regional Star Farmery of which there are four regions. Dr. Robert Herr, head of the Vocational Agriculture depart ment at New Holland, is scheduled to be one of 77 vocational agriculture in structors to receive the Honorary American Farmer Degree. The instructors receiving the degree this year come from the ranks of 10,000 men and women who are teaching vocational agriculture throughout the United States and Puerto Rico. One of the four regional award recipients will be named national winner. Community Action Awards will be presented to two area Chap ters. Northern Lebanon will be one of 33 Chapters presented the National Gold Emblem award while Grassland Chapter, New Holland, will receive a silver emblem. They are among 58 Chapters receiving national silver and bronze awards for their efforts in community development. Grassland Chapter and Nor thern Lebanon Chapter will be receiving gold emblems in the National Chapter award program, while Cloister Chapter and Manheim Chapter will be presented silver emblems. These emblems are awarded for superior performance in programs of activities relating to the vocational agriculture and FFA programs in their high school. This year 101 Chapters are being awarded the gold emblem, 102 Chapters the silver emblem, and another 72 the bronze emblem award. Nelson E. Contest areas to be entered by local chapters include: Garden Spot, ag mechanics; Solanco, dairy cattle; Pequea Valley, livestock, Penn Manor and Cloister, meats, Eastern York, Penn Manor, and Bucks County Area vo-tech, poultry. More than 710 FFA members will be entered in various contest areas. To be eligible for national competition, members first competed and won in chapter, district and state contests. Roger Good, Airville, will be one of 99 singers as the FFA chorus entertains during the course of the Convention. Jeff Glackin, Solanco Chapter, will also be a Convention-goer, having recieved the Rural Youth Award at the Solanco Fair. More than 13,000 FFA mem bers and guests are expected to attend the Convention. The Convention is an annual event to conduct the business of the National FFA and give awards for outstanding accomplishments of FFA members on the national level. Meof Group elects Lyng Richard Lyng, formerly Assistant Secretary of Agriculture, was recently elected the new president of the American Meat Institute at the conclusion of its 68th Annual Meeting at the Conrad Hilton Hotel. Lyng succeeds Herrell DeGraff who is retiring after 10 years of service. Lyng served as Assistant Secretary of Agriculture from 1969 to 1973 under President Nixon. He was responsible for marketing and consumer ser vices in the USDA. He also was a director of the Commodity Credit Corporation and was chairman of the Child Nutrition Advisory Council. Previously, he was director of the California Department of Agriculture under Governor Ronald Reagan. Originally from Modesto, Calif., he was president of the Ed. J. Lung Co., Inc., a family operated seed business and was former president of the California Seed Association.
