Mrs. Alexander went on to
recount a series of genuine horror
stories about snakes in the

She said the ag department with
its 27 bureaus was trying to do a
good jub of policing the food
industry, but there were two
major stumbling blocks.
“Pennsylvania’s general food
law was passed in 1909. Do you
know how many things have
changed since 1909? For the past
four years, our administration
has been trying to get a new food
law passed by the legislature.
Every year we introduce a bill,
and every year it gets shot
down,”
“Another problem is that we
just don’t have enough agents to
police everybody and everything.
If consumers want the quality
and quantity they’re paying for,
they’ll have to report violations to
the department. We think we
have a pretty reliable food in
dustry 'in the state of Penn
sylvania. But we can’t catch the
violators without cooperation
from consumers.”
