More than 115,000 strong in Pennsylvania, the group whose ages range from eight through 19, in urban, suburban and rural homes are observing National 4- H Club Week, October 7-13. The 4-H program is a practical, out-of-classroom educational activity started 56 years ago. When 4-H was first started, members studied projects in livestock, crops, cooking and sewing - providing stepping sones to improve farm and family living. “Traditional” 4-H projects continue to grow along with new interest in areas of arts and crafts, babysitting, photography, geology, con servation, electricity, veterinary science, dog clubs for guide dog training and many others Each 4-H member is involved in one or more projects for which he or she alone is responsible Although members receive guidance from parents, volunteer adult leaders, and Extension staff members, the value of the finished project is up to the in dividual. During National 4-JI Week, our attention turns to the head-heart health-hands youth program. The “learn by doing” concept carried out in dozens of project areas illustrates the 4-H way of preparing youth for tomorrow.
