Spent Hen Sales
Advance Sharply
Sales of spent hens through the
AAMA fowl sales program in 1973
are almost double those for the
same period last year according
to Troy Barton, Manager,
American Agricultural
Marketing Association Poultry
Operations.
“Improved marketing of spent
hens is a key to increasing egg
producers’ net incomes,” said
Barton. “We have been selling
both light and heavy hens for the
past two years in nine
southeastern states and have now
expanded to four midwestem
states,” Barton added. “Hun
dreds of both large and small
producers are being served in the
13 states and the program is
highly successful.”
According to Barton, the
success of the program has been
due largely to the loyalty of the
producers who sell through it and
the ability of the AAMA sales
staff to maintain excellent
relations with buyers. The
program is producer oriented, he
pointed out. Before sales are
finalized, producers are provided
bidder information on prices and
conditions of sale. The producer
then chosses the bidder who gets
his hens. The bidder is then
notified of his purchase.
At present time egg producers
in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida,
Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi,
North Caroling, South Carolina,
Virginia, lowa, Indiana, Illinois
and Ohio participate in the
program.
