In Wednesday afternoon’s swine competition, Rick Pfautz, 18, Stevens RDI, captured both the champion boar and champion sow awards. A 1972 graduate of Ephrata Area High School, Rick is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Pfautz. The champion market hog was shown by Carl Thomas, 14, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Thomas, Millersville RDI. In addition, Carl showed the champion pen of four hogs. The hog show was judged by Mark Nestleroth, Manheim. At the sheep show on Wednesday, blue ribbons were rather evenly distributed bet ween about six exhibitors showing 52 sheep in seven breeds. The cow was owned by Susan’s father, J. Mowery Frey. Frey’s five-year-old cow was also among the best three females in the show. James High’s five-year-old Holstein took the reserve champion ribbon. The 4-H champion entry was won by Sandra Frey, daughter of J. Mowery Frey. The reserve honors went to Randy Hess. Rick Hess, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Hess, took the top FFA honors. Rick’s cousin, Randy Hess captured the senior showman trophy while Randy’s cousin, Jack Hess, took the junior showman award. Keeping it in the family, Elvin Hess, Randy’s father, captured the senior Holstein get award. Jay Landis’s Holstein took the best udder award. Another Hess, Curt, also took the junior reserve ribbon while Susan Frey took the Holstein Junior championship. The grand champion for the Guernsey event went to Kenneth Garbep, Willow Street RD2. Garber’s entry also took the senior champion Guernsey title. Garber’s son, Gerald, captured the junior champion Guernsey title with his eight-month-old junior calf. • Arthur Brenneman won the reserve grand champion title with his Guernsey and also the senior reserve ribbon. Bren neman also showed the best three Guernsey females. Ken Garber captured the best udder award in the Guernsey competition. In the Brown Swiss breed, Steve Witowski’s junior calf took top honors. It was the only entry. The show was judged by Sam Acker, Chester Springs. INTEREST FREE UNTIL NEXT SPRINGS USE Ph. 367-1319 John Kreider Home 367-6039 Kerry Boyd, Ephrata, showed the reserve Beef Show on Thursday night, grand champion at the Ephrata Fair Baby Ephrata Winners Competition at the Ephrata Fair began Tuesday night with a greased pig chase and an adult tractor driving contest. The tractor drivers were faced with an unusual test of skill this time, with the addition of a double hitch backing contest to the regular tractor course. The contest consisted of backing a tractor towing a forage harvester and forage wagon - all 10 axles - down a marked course without “jack-knifing” or crossing the marked lines. Charles Ackley, a vo-ag in structor at Ephrata Area High School for the past nine years, won the event. One of the courses he teaches is tractor safety. First place winner in the regular tractor driving contest Tuesday was Leonard Kreider, Lititz RD4. Kreider demonstrated his tractor driving skill by driving a manure spreader through an Elizabethtown, Pa Lancaster Farming, Saturday, September 29,1973 — obstacle course, backing it into a stall and backing a four-wheel wagon into a stall. Second place in the tractor driving competition went to Clark Stauffer, Ephrata RDI. Tom Zartman, Ephrata RDI, placed third and Glenn Martin, Ephrata RDI, placed fourth. In the pig chase, 14-year-old Daryl Martin proved to be the best bacon bagger in the 15-years and under competition. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs .Theodore H. Martin, Ephrata RDI. Martin’s prize was his catch. The two runnersup in the event, Steve Nelson 15-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Nelson, Stevens RD2, and Dennis Martin, 14-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Theodore H. Martin, Ephrata RDI, each won 10 pounds of pork chops. In over 15 years of age com petition, Dave Moore, 32, Ephrata RD2, won the 150-pound pig which he captured. PENN-JERSEY HARVESTORE . W>i Other finalists in the adult pig chase were Phil Leininger, 20, Denver RD2, Edwin Williams, 41, Stevens RDI; and Dale Weid man, 23, Stevens RDI. In Wednesday’s junior market lamb show, the three children of Dr. and Mrs. Robert D. Herr, Narvon RD2, had the champion and reserve champion market lambs and the champion on-foot carcass lamb. Dr. Herr is chairman of the vocational agriculture depart ment at Garden Spot High School, in addition to being one of the county’s top sheep farmers. The Herrs raise about 90 sheep. Ten year-old Barbara took the grand champion market lamb rosette with her Dorset lamb. The reserve grand champion market lamb was shown by 14-year-old Elizabeth.
