THE OLD
Ask the Old Fanner. How did
the old-timers keep a fire all
night in a fireplace? I can’t
do it. F. C., Troy, N.Y.
First of all, they had a biff
fireplace. And kept it half
full of ashes. They dug the
ashes out of the hack, and
laid the hack-log on the
bricks, behind the andirons.
