Premiums To Be High At
All-American Dairy Show
The Pennsylvania All-
American (PAA) Dairy Show is a
big-time, big money event. The
10th annual edition of this in
ternational dairy event will open
Monday, September 24 at the
Farm Show.
Premiums to be offered this
year are estimated at well over
$50,000. But this is really just the
tip of the iceberg when you
consider the total amount of
money to be banked by exhibitors
at the end of the week.
Three invitational breed sales
could easily generate four or five
times the amount of money that
is awarded to dairymen who
successfully place cows and bulls
dered the firm to refund $97,747 to
retail customers, as well as roll
back prices to cover another
$3,523 in sales which exceeded
price ceiling figures.
Kansas Beef, based in Wichita,
Kan., is a beef wholesaler which
supplies retailers in the
Philadelphia area.
in the more than 200 different
classes of competition.
Last year the sales yielded
more than $200,000, with a year
old bull calf bringing an even
$50,000. Several other females
were bid up to high four figure
amounts before the auctioneer’s
hammer slammed out “sold!”.
The three invitational sales
scheduled for this year’s PAA are
for Brown Swiss, Ayrshires and
Holsteins. All are slated for the
early evening hours in the newly
refurbished Small Arena at the
Farm Show.
Leading off the three sales will
be the Brown Swiss which is
expected to attract a larger and
better quality consignment as the
Brown Swiss Catfle Breeders’
Association, Beloit, Wisconsin,
has moved its Eastern National
show to the PAA this year
marking the first time that this
event has ever been held this far
east. The Brown Swiss sale will
begin at 7 p.m. Monday.
The Pennsylvania Ayrshire
Breeders Association will stage
its invitational breed sale,
Tuesday at 7 p.m., and then after
a night off for the annual banquet
and Dairy Princess pageant, the
Pennsylvania Holstein
Association will close out the
sales activity at 6 p.m. Thursday.
Early speculation for another
middle five-figure sale is cen
tered on a five-month-old
Holstein bull, a son of Whirlhill
Kingpin and a maternal grandson
of the legendary ABC Reflection
Sovereign.
All the bidding will be spirited
and unlike the typical Saturday
night auction of used television
sets and inoperative household
appliances, the bidding will be
done by knowledgeable dairy
cattle breeders who can look at
an immature animal, glance at
the pedigree in the sales catalog
and than bet thousands of dollars
that the animal on the block will
be worth that much to him and
more.
