Local Hogs and Cattle Prices Dip Hog and cattle prices on local markets continued the downward trend begun last week. With steers and hogs hovering around the $55.00 mark, prices were anything but low, but they were down somewhat from the inflated highs of three or four weeks ago. No one at this point has predicted a big drop from present levels. Looks like the market may have settled down for awhile. Area FFA youths brought home numerous ribbons and honors, including several grand championships and reserve champion honors, following the District FFA Dairy Show at Harrisburg Wednesday. The Southeastern District includes 14 counties. Charles Coates, a member of the Solanco FFA Chapter, was a double winner in Guernsey competition, showing both the grand champion and reserve champion animals. Donald Wenger, Manheim FFA Chapter, had the grand champion winner with his eight-year-old Brown Swiss. Harry Leininger, Cloister Chapter, was the reserve champion winner. Jersey grand champion winner was James Wertz from the Owen J. Roberts Chapter, with David Bitler, Solanco Chapter, as reserve champion. Lebanon countians were successful in capping Ayrshire championships, with top winners coming from the Northern Lebanon FFA Chapter. Bruce Maulfair showed the grand champion while Dale Maulfair had the reserve champion animal. In Holstein competition, grand champion of the show was shown by Donald Heist, Cedar Crest Chapter. Russel Kline, from the Cloister FFA Chapter, had the reserve champion animal. Two breeds were judged in the area of County Groups of Four. In Holstein competition, County winners were: Lancaster, first; Lebanon, second; York, third, and Chester, fourth. In Ayrshire County Groups of Four, Lebanon was first, followed with Chester in second place and Lancaster third. Blue ribbon winners in the District Show became eligible to show their animals at the State Junior Dairy Show during the Pennsylvania All-American Dairy Show in Harrisburg Sep tember 24.
