Facts For Dairymen (Continued From Page 62) ' firmly committed his department to eradication of brucellosis in the U. S. by the end of 1975. Recently, it was announced that the goal was “reluctantly dropped”, and figures were released which show that brucellosis has actually been making a comeback in die past year. The number of infected herds has increased three per cent since 1971. Several major problem areas are contributing to the present dilemma. About 26 percent of all the infected herds found are in Texas. Another 37 percent of the infected herds were found in three states: Mississippi, Louisiana and Oklahoma. Another seven states: Alabama, Arkansas, Kansas, -Georgia, Kentucky, Florida and Tennessee account for an additional 25 percent. Thus, 88 percent of all the brucellosis infected herds are found in 11 states. Of these states only two showed any measurable progress in eradication. At the end of 1972 only nine counties in the U. S. lacked any type of brucellosis certification. Eight of those counties had reached modified certified status but failed to follow through with the program. One county, Nueces County, Texas, has the distinc tion of being the last U. S. county to do anything about brucellosis. This announcement was recently made by Dr. Samuel B. Guss, Extension Veterinarian at Penn State University. + + + Century Plant The name century plant for the agave came from the mis taken idea that the American century plant blooms only once in 100 years. Some kinds flower every year and others at longer periods, but none blooms so rarely as once a century.
