Greater New York-New Jersey: Week begins cloudy, then rain
by midweek; end of week clear and very warm.

Southeast Coastal-Piedmont: Cloudy and cool through midweek,

European Processor Urges
Expanded Soybean Production
A leading European oilseed
processor urged American
Soybean Association delegates to
expand production in order to
“reinstate trust in U. S.
soybeans” following ad
ministration embargoes.
Arnold Merged, president of
the Federation of European
Oilseed Processors (FEDIOL)
who heads his own plant in
Germany, also warned that a
combination of the embargo and
current prices has encouraged
production of other protein
sources.

Placements
Placements of broiler chicks in
the Commonwealth during the
week ending August 11,1973 were
1,299,000. The placements were 3
percent above the corresponding
week a year earlier, and 2 per
cent below the previous week.
Average placements during the
past 10 weeks were 9 percent
above a year earlier.
Settings for broiler chicks were
1,913,000 - 6 percent below the
previous week and 5 percent
above the comparable period a
year earlier. The current 3-week
total of eggs set is 9 percent
above the same period a year
ago.
Inshipments of broiler-type
chicks during the past 10 weeks
averaged 1,000, compared' with
34,000 a year ago. Outshipments
averaged 296,000 during the past
10 weeks, 13 percent above a year
earlier.
Placements in the 21 States
were 58,162,000 - 2 percent above
the previous week and 3 percent
below the same week a year
earlier. Average placements
during the past 10 weeks were 4
percent below a year ago.
Settings were 71,394,000 - 1
percent belbw the previous week
and 2 percent below a year
earlier. The current 3-week total
of eggs set is 2 percent below the
comparable period a year ago.

continue to supply insignificant
quantities to Japan, but world
wide this source of supply is gone.
Brazil is making every effort to
encourage production. Other
parts of the world may try to
grow more soybeans, but in my
opinion, they will not be able to
produce supplies worth talking
about.
“We are seeing extremely high
prices that have prompted many
soybean meal users to look for
substitutes. They can be found.
Although protein from mineral
oil and other sources cannot
replace soybean meal entirely,
the danger exists that the trend to
substitutes will be favored.”
