at Johnstown this year and they
have sponsored bus trips to
Ocean City, N. J. this year and
last year.
Rutts are members of Inter-
State Milk Producers. Ken was
selected as Young Co-operator
for District 3 in 1972 and attended
a meeting at Hunt Valley Inn
where he won second place in the
contest. This contest was based
one-third on an interview, one
third on farm operation plus
inspection of milk equipment,
and one-third on a speech. Last
August he and Mrs. Rutt were
given a week’s all-expense paid
•trip to the American Institute of
Cooperation at lowa State
University, Ames, lowa. He also
attended the annual meeting of
Inter-State at Philadelphia and
milk hearings in Philadelphia

Kenneth is 4-H leader for the
County Holstein Club which has
about 115 members this year. He
has been leader for four years.
He, himself, was in the 4-H Dairy
Club and was on the county dairy
judging team. He won first place
and went to Waterloo, lowa. In
1964 he was on a team of four in
livestock judging. They won in
the state competition and went to
the International Livestock
Exposition for two weeks. The
team placed 11th there and he
placed 20th individually and
received trophies. He also won
first place at state, Richmond,
Va. and Timmonium, Md. Donald
Trimble was his coach.
Ken also was in the swine 4-H
Club of which County Agent M.

Kenneth shows his wife how to use their magnetic
breeding calendar.
M. Smith was coach. In 1965 he
was on the four-member judging
team. He was high individual in
the state with a perfect score.
Kenneth has been a member of
the Pennsylvania Farmers
Association for three years. He
has belonged to Solanco Young
Farmers about six years and
served as president three years
ago. He is serving his second year
as public relations director of the
Lancaster County Holstein
Association, is a member of the
state and the Holstein-Friesian
Association of America.
Ken has been a member of
Quarryville Jaycees for two
years and is a director. They
have about 50 members. Last
year they sponsored the Jaycees
Outstanding Young Farmer
Contest and he went with the
local winner, Robert Kauffman,
to the national competition at St.
Paul, Minn. Ken is chairman of
the contest this year.
Mr. and Mrs. Rutt are active
members of the Mechanic Grove
Church of the Brethren where
they are serving a three year
term on the Deacon Board. It is

their duty to serve at communion
and love feast, and they have 16
families to visit a year. They
went to Hill Top the last four
years as youth counselors for a
weekend. It is for young people
from grades seven through 12.
Some 180 attended the first
weekend of June this year. They
helped the Key 73 program in
making a church affiliation
survey and in givmg out the
books of Luke and Acts Kenneth
was a Sunday School teacher.
Connie taught four-year-old
children at their Daily Vacation
Bible School in June. She is
secretary of her young married
couples Sunday School class, the
Peacemakers Class.
Kenneth and Connie have a
trail bike which they ride in
dividually and together and the
children like to ride it too. The
family enjoys doing things
together They like to go to
Vermont for a week to ski. They
fish m their two farm ponds
which are stocked with blue gills
and large mouth bass. They have
a hunting cabin in Sullivan
County where the family goes
once in the summer. Kenneth
hunts deer there as well as
locally.
Mrs. Rutt says “I do some
knitting. I like to bake, I like
cooking.” Some of her favorite
recipes are:
Oatmeal Cake
V 4 pound margarine
IV4 cups boiling water
1 cup quick oats
Combine and let stand 20
minutes. Then add;
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup granulated sugar
2 eggs (1 at a time)

1 1-3 cups flour
Vfe teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon vanilla
Bake at 350 degrees for 35
minutes
Topping
(Cake must be cold before
topping )
6 tablespoons margarine
Vfe cup brown sugar
1 cup chopped pecans or English
walnuts
Vi cup cocoanut
Vz teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon water
Combine and heat to a good
boil. Spread on cold cake and
brown under broiler. Watch
closely to keep from burning.

Shrimp Dip
Combine:
1 pint sour cream
Vfe package onion soup mix
1 can (41/2 oz.) shrimp, chopped
2 tablespoons chopped sweet
pickle
1 tablespoon sweet pickle juice

Lime Party Salad
V 4 pound marshmallows
1 cup milk
Heat until marshmallows melt,
Stir in:
1 package lime jello
Then add:
6 ounce package cream cheese
I can crushed pineapple
Let cool Then add
-1 cup cream, whipped
3 4 cup mayonnaise
Pour into mold and chill until
firm

Shoo Fly Cake
4 cups flour
1 pound light brown sugar
1 cup margarine
2 cups boiling water
1 cup molasses
2 teaspoons soda
Mix flour, sugar and butter into
crumbs. Save 1 heaping cup
crumbs for the top. Mix water,
syrup and baking soda. Pour
crumbs into the mixture and mix
well. Pour into greased and
floured pan and top with the cup
of crumbs Bake at 350 degrees
about 45 - 50 minutes or until tooth
pick comes out clean.
