Many participants in the Northern Nut
Growers Association annual meeting
brought their families with them to the
meeting site at Franklin and Marshall
College. This father was explaining dif
ferences between varieties to his children

Top Lebanon
Hog Sells for
Tom Arnold’s grand champion
crossbred hog sold for 90-cents a
pound this week at the Lebanon
County 4-H hog show and sale at
the Vintage Sales Stables. Ar
nold’s 210-Ib. porker brought a
total of $lB9. Arnold lives at 1245
E. Cumberland St., Lebanon. His
hog was bought by the Lebanon
County Yorkshire Breeders.
In all, 65 4-H hogs went under
the auctioneers gavel, bringing
an average sale price of $57.76
per hundredweight. The average
weight for all the hogs was just
over 199 pounds.
The reserve champion was a
210-pound Yorkshire shown by
Jeff Paine, Lebanon RD4. Leidv
Inc., of Souderton, Pa. paid 79-
cents a pound for Paine’s hog.

Secretary of Agriculture Earl
L. Butz announced the ap
pointment of David L. Hume as
administrator of the Depart
ment’s Foreign Agricultural
Service (FAS).
Hume, who has been U. S.
agricultural attache in Tokyo
since February 1972, succeeds
Raymond A. loanes, who is
retiring August 31 after 32 years
of government service. Hume has
been with FAS, the government
agency that represents U.S.
agriculture in foreign affairs,
since 1958. He served as director
of the Dairy and Poultry Dvision
and as assistant administrator
for export programs before
assignments to London and then
Tokyo as agricultural attache.
Hume, who is 59, was awarded
the U. S. Department of
Agriculture (USDA) Superior
Service Award for his work in
London. During his tenure in
Japan, U. S. agricultural exports
to Japan rose by $1 billion for the
fiscal year. Japan is this coun
try’s largest agricultural
customer.
He is a native of Brookings, S.
D, and a graduate of South
Dakota State University at
Brookings. He received a
master’s degree in animal
husbandry and agricultural
economics from North Dakota
State University, Fargo, N. D.,
where he was administrative
assistant to the dean of
agriculture and to the director of
the Agricultural Experiment
Station before entering the U S.
Army in 1941.

cents for his 200-pound porker
from Vintage Sales Stables.
Donald Bollinger, Myerstown
RD2, had the champion Lan
drace, and got 60.5-cents a pound
from Hershey Abattoir.
