    Dr, Wilson, Animal Scientist, Honored
One of the nation’s highest
awards to animal scientists was
presented to Dr. Lowell L. Wilson
of The Pennsylvania State
University. Dr. Wilson received
the animal management award
of the American Society of
Animal Science and a check for
$l,OOO during the Society’s annual
meeting.
One of the youngest animal
scientists ever to receive the
award, Dr. Wilson received the
doctor of philosophy degree from
South Dakota State University in
1964. Since the early 1960’s he has
been the author or co-author of 45
technical papers and 150 semi
technical or producer-oriented
articles.
As Extension beef cattle
specialist at Purdue University
from 1964 to 1966, he had primary
responsibility for advising cat
tlemen involved in cow-calf

this period the number of herds
that were performance tested in
Indiana increased from 35 to 130.
At the same time, he was helpful
in founding the Indiana Cat

cited by the group for his
achievements.
While at Purdue University Dr.
Wilson established one of the first
beef bull-dairy cow
crossbreeding research projects.
He was responsible for initiating
electronic data processing of beef

records in both Indiana and South
Dakota.
In 1966 he accepted a position
as associate professor of animal
science at Penn State. He was
promoted to professor in 1971.

following;
He has shown that beef cows
produced by crossing beef bulls
with dairy cows develop larger
calves than otherwise-since the
calves gain weight rapidly
because of the milk-producing
potential of the dairy cow
mother.
Another experiment indicates
that the ranking of sires, based on
weight gains and feed efficiency
of offspring, is affected little by
the actual “level of per
formance” in herds in which the
offspring are evaluated.
Dr. Wilson also determined
that the dimensions of a beef
animal’s body are not always
useful in predicting the value of
the carcass. For many years
such dimensions were considered
good indicators of carcass
quality.
Dr. Wilson and associates
determined that the animal
growth-promotant known as
zeranol can increase weight
gains economically. The result is
that zeranol can replace DES

promotant once used widely by
livestock producers but now
forbidden by the Food and Drug
Administration.
At the same time, it was
determined that zeranol has no
harmful effect on carcass
meatiness or carcass quality.
The same studies also found that
zeranol, and combinations of
other growth-promotants, are no
more efficient than zeranol used
alone.
His experiments proved the
effectiveness and safety in using
processing wastes from fruit
packing plants for beef cattle
feed. The recycling of wastes was
found beneficial to the farmer,
the food processor, and the
consumer.
Dr. Wilson and associates have
shown that partially castrated
male lambs, known as cryp
torchids, are more efficient in
rate of weight gain and feed ef
ficiency than traditional
castrated wethers. Also, meat
from such cryptorchid castrates
is highly acceptable compared to
meat from rams.
Financial support for the $l,OOO
award came from Merck and

Full-Employment
Growth Anticipated
By Bank of America
The pattern of consumer
spending over the next six
to nine months will largely
determine the overall pattern
of economic activity in the
United States over the next
two years, says a Bank of
America economic forecast.
“The longer the current
boom in consumer durables
continues, the more severe
will be the correction in
1974,” says the current fore
cast, “Focus on the U.S.
Economy; the Next 18
Months.”
The big question facing the
economy is whether the rapid
expansion during the first
half of 1973 can be slowed to
more sustainable rates with
out causing an actual down
turn in economic activity.
The report indicates that it
can. i
“We believe a sustainable
full-employment growth path
will be achieved without a
full-blown recession,” the
bank’s economists say. “How
ever, real output growth
could be close to zero or even
negative in one quarter in
late 1973 or early 1974.”
