28—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, July 14, 1973 Vigilance Urged On Hog Cholera U S Department of Agriculture officials--citmg a hog cholera outbreak in Indiana last week-urged hog producers and practicing veterinarians to remain alert and report any suspicious illness in swine Officials of USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) explained that hog cholera may appear in either an acute or chronic form In cases of acute or severe infection, hogs sicken and die quickly In the chronic or less severe infection, hogs may be sick for weeks or months before they succumb In some cases, they recover Low-grade or chronic hog cholera was diagnosed in an Indiana herd of 328 swine on June 28 The herd has been destroyed to prevent spread of infection and the owners will be indemnified for their losses An area around the outbreak will remain under quarantine for 30 days following cleaning and disinfection of the premises APHIS officials noted the in fection was discovered by a local veterinary practitioner who submitted tissue samples to the diagnostic laboratory at Purdue University for analysis. Hog cholera is an infectious and usually fatal disease of swine It has been the object of a nationwide eradication program since 1962. Caused by a virus, hog cholera affects no other animals or humans. APHIS officials note that often in the final stages of eradication efforts, cases which are not typical appear, so diagnosticians must not be misled by the symptoms. The officials urged veterinarians examining hogs not to overlook unusual symptoms. Hog cholera cases increased markedly during the 12-month period ending July 1, with the reporting of 163 infected herds containing 61,400 hogs. This’is more than double the 76 infected herds containing 19,400 hogs reported during the previous 12 months (July 1, 1971 - June 30, 1972). APHIS officials point out, however, that hog cholera cases have dropped dramatically in the past six months, compared with the same period last year. From Jan 1 to July 1, 1972, some 58 infected herds were reported. From Jan Ito July 1, 1973, only 16 infected herds were found-a 74 percent reduction in disease incidence. During the last 12 months, 70 percent of the infected herds were in five states: Indiana, Kentucky, New Jersey, North Carolina, and Ohio Outbreaks last year caused Secretary of Agriculture Earl Butz to declare a national emergency on Oct. 11, to protect the country’s pork supply and halt further spreading of the disease. Prior to the recent Indiana outbreaks the last previous hog cholera infection was diagnosed on May 2 in Texas. Puerto Rico reported two infected herds on March 22 and 23, and remains under federal quarantine for hog cholera LLOYD H.
