THE OLD

JUNE 2 5-JULY 1,1973
Sing love’s tune under the new June Moon.
Plant cucumbers for pickling . . . A.B. Doubleday, father of
American baseball, born June 26,1819 .. . New Moon June 30
. . . Total eclipse of the Sun. June 30, but not visible from
the U.S. . . . Average length of days for week, 15 hours,
17 minutes ... Year’s latest sunsets this week ... The year’s
half gone now ... First air clipper took passengers to Europe
June 28,1939 ... If we do not subdue our passions, they will
subdue us.
Old Fanner’s Riddle: What is smaller than an insect’s mouth?
(Answer below.)
Ask the Old Farmer: Can you
tell us how to make bayberry
candles? And how many ber
ries it might take to make a
definite number of candles?
We live on the eastern shore
of Maryland where the na
tive bayberry grows. K.N.8.,
Salisbury, Maryland.
We never made them, but
we know that first of all you boil the bayberries and then let
the mixture cool. The wax rises to the top and solidifies. Take
it off and use it like any other wax. As to the number of
berries needed, it’s probably a good many more than you
would think. A bucketful might make one candle, if it wasn’t
too big.
Horn* Him,- U»e powdered starch to clean wallpaper when nothin* else
will work ... To remove tar. rub well with clean lard, then wash with
soap and warm water . . . Riddle answer What the insect eats.
