    Snyder 'Farmer of Month' At
Robert L. Snyder, Winfield
RDI, has been named the Out
standing Young Farmer for the
month at the Selinsgrove High
School Chapter. He has been a
member of the Selinsgrove
Young Farmers since moving
into the area in 1964 from
Lycoming County. He bought the
155 acre farm on which he now

lives and has 80 acres of corn, 35
acres of oats, 12 acres of wheat
and the remaining crop acreage
in hay.
Corn fits very nicely into
Snyder’s livestock program
which is fattening bulls in the age
interval from one week to one
year of age on shelled corn. This
type of feeding program in which
Selinsgrove
no other grain, hay, pasture, or
silage is fed produces animals
widely known as Tender-Lean
Beef.
The Holstein bull calves are
purchased when three to five
days of age and fed milk replacer
and calf starter for six weeks at
which time they are switched
over to shelled corn fed free
choice. The only other feed in
addition to shelled corn that these
animals receive until marketed is
one-and-one-half pounds of
pellets per day top-dressed on the
corn The pellets are formulated
to assist in complete digestion of
the shelled corn so that whole
kernels don’t pass through the
animals.
The Tender-Lean program is
designed for dry shelled corn or
high moisture corn if less than 27
percent moisture. Last fall
Lancaster Farming, Saturday, June 16,1973
Snyder decided a grain storage
facility would be the most
economical and best labor saving
method to store 8000 to 9000
bushels of shelled corn as it was
harvested. He picker-shells in the
field with a two-row cage type
picker-sheller machine. Field
losses are at a bare minimum,
the number of kernels remaining
on ends of ears, broken cobs, etc.,
practically none. The two-row
picker will handle 30-inch rows
which is the way the planter is set
for this year.
The capacity of stored corn
makes possible the feeding of 100
steers and 500 hogs in com
bination or 150 steers alone. This
allows the possibility of at least
one-and-one-half animal units per
acre. He presently has 50 head
with a potential of doubling his
herd in the near future.
Much of the chore-time is light
work in comparison to older
conventional methods of
livestock feeding. The children
assist in feeding and caring for
the young calves. Snyder and his
wife, Annette, have three
daughters and two sons at home.
