    With Russian ladder, Leonid
Brezhnev, arriving in our country
later this month, there is certain
to be another wave of publicity
about better relations with the
Communists.
President Nixon’s trips to
China and the Soviet Union
opened a new era of relations
with the two Communist giants.
There can be no doubt that our
dealings with both countries in
diplomatic, cultural and
economic matters have improved
substantially.
But the danger in emphasizing
only this new, improved in
ternational climate is that not
enough attention is paid to our
HALES® HUNTER CO.
Franklin & High St
Pioneer - - Nutrena
In the next few months you'll be seeing a new
name in this area. Nutrena, a well respected,
dynamic feed name of the mid-west and south
will be seen here in south-central Penna. But
•before you rush out to buy some of this
revolutionary new feed, stop! It's not new at
all. You were buying the same fine feed for
some time under the Pioneer brand. You see.
Pioneer and Nutrena are the same thing. Hales
and Hunter Co., the company who developed
the Pioneer name was bought by Cargill, the
company who developed the Nutrena name.
Shortly after the jointure, all feed formulas
were reviewed and those that worked best on
the research farm were chosen to be sold by
both.
Even though you con rest assured that your
feed will not change when the name on the tag
reads Nutrena rather than Pioneer, you can
also be sure our research staff is working hard
to develop new and better programs for all
classes of livestock.
Agriculture is changing and we are changing
too. We will meet the challenge of providing
todays farmer with new products when he
needs them, but we'll also stick to the old
Pioneer and Nutrena formulas when they
prove best.
We really believe that working as one unit
rather than two, we will be in an even better
position to help all our friends find solutions to
their feeding problems. Nutrena always was
well equipped with customer aids to take some
of the guess work out selecting the best
program for all classes of livestock. The future
looks even better. Now that we have access to
the large expert staff of Nutrena, we are ex
pecting bigger and better things for all our
customers.
Until existing stocks of bags are used up, some
of you may get both Pioneer and Nutrena bags
in the same load. Don't get excited, nobody
made a mistake. We're just changing our
name. Come to think of it, I was in on a name
change fifteen years ago, and four children
later, it still seems like a good idea.

continuing role as an adversary
of the two most powerful Com
munist nations.
Americans should not be lulled
into forgetting that the Com
munist powers, despite their
present turn toward good will,
continue to challenge us in the
world. The challenge is more
than political, more than
economic, more than diplomatic
and more than military. It is a
challenge based upon opposing
systems of values.
The Communist system has a
purely economic base. Its
philosophy, its methods of
.governing and its goals are based
on the exploitation of people to

bring about economic success.
The American system also has
strong economic underpinnings.
But even more basic to our
system is a strong sense of in
dividual worth which has as its
foundation a deep spiritual
commitment.
The plight of those Jews in
Russia who wish to immigrate to
Israel is a good example of the
differing value systems. The
Soviet Union has been blocking
their immigration for strictly
economic reasons - the govern
ment has a big investment in the
training of many of the Jews and
it does not want to lose their
skills. In this country no such
incident could arise because
people are free to come and go
regardless of the economic
consequences.
The reason for the Jews
wishing to immigrate strikes
even closer to the heart of the
differences between a Com
munist society and ours. The Jew
is unable to practice his religion
freely in Russia because religion
is a threat to the state. Spiritual
concerns do not tend to promote
economic interests, and therefore
are discouraged as a matter of
government policy.
The American system en
courages religious expression
because we believe that govern
ment should serve not only men
but a higher spiritual purpose.
This is a source of our strength in
trying times like the present, for
we look to our spiritual comitt
ment to help us see what must be
done to rid ourselves of the evil
around us and get the Nation
back on course.
If we fail to remember these
fundamental differences between
the Communists and ourselves,

we may allow ourselves to
become convinced that their
goals are not so different from
our own. Once convinced, we
may go even further and decide
that since we share common
goals, there is no need to defend
ourselves against Communist
domination.
Nothing could be further from
the truth. America cannot
abandon its defenses - economic,
diplomatic and military -
without the grave risk that we
will lose everything we hold most
dear.
Today’s new era of good will
among adversaries offers the
hope that all men will be freed
trom the fear of war. But we
must never forget that America
believes, above everything else,
that all men deserve to be free -
