Billion Dollar Industry

specialist at The Pennsylvania
State University says that the
Pennsylvania dairy industry will
remain viable in spite of our
current weather and political
problems
An industry that contributes 43
percent of the total cash farm
income of the state and 51 of our
67 counties list dairying as a
major source of farm income
must survive This is true
because we have large milk
markets, suitable soil, and
climate, and above all, the know
how to produce milk efficiently,
explains Taylor
It is vital to the over-all -
economy of Pennsylvania that a
stable dairy industry be main
tained First, to supply milk to
our urban consumers at a fair
price Second, to promote
through dairying, a soil and
water conserving agriculture
which builds, rather than
depletes, our most important and
essential National resources,
namely soil fertility and water.

with one good crop production
year this loss in production could
be quickly reversed “We still
have good dairymen on good soils
milking good cows, the necessary
elements for a viable industry,”
adds Taylor

Milk Prices
Discussing the price of milk is
not new for the dairy industry
And according to Penn State
Extension dairy specialist Joe
Taylor, the price of milk is
popular because it’s a political
food Everyone, old and young,
drinks milk, and everyone over 18
votes, so it’s natural for
politicians seeking votes to be
concerned about the price of
milk
Dairymen are smiling at
politicians today, Taylor says,
because they have suddenly
discovered that all prices are too
high food and consumer goods
The consumer’s pinch is that
they have to eat every day They
can put off buying an auto, a TV
set or other durable goods but
not food So really, explains
Taylor, consumers are worried
about inflation and not food
prices alone But at the moment,
milk and meat are the political
issues that arouse voters
What is the real price of milk 9
Well, according to Taylor, the
real price of milk is ten minutes
That’s how long the average
factory worker has to work, to
earn enough money to buy one
half gallon of milk However,
dairymen are concerned that
inflation of all prices, will force
consumers to buy less milk, even
though it’s a food bargain .at
today’s prices
Taylor points out that the
dairymen are saying, “Let’s live
and let live But consumers,
please don’t ask us to absorb all
of the nation’s inflation in the
price of milk ” So, the next time
you hear a political aspirant
talking about the price of milk,
just ask him to elaborate on the
price of everything you have to
buy

supermarket if advertised
specials are out-of-stock when

Neigh, Extension consumer
specialist at The Pennsylvania
State University, says you should
inform the management when
the special is out of stock and ask
for a raincheck offer when the
supply is replenished
