Introduce Heifers
Into Herd Early
Breaking dairy heifers to the
milking routine often presents a
serious problem, says Harvey E.
Shaffer, Extension dairy
specialist at The Pennsylvania
State University. At best, a heifer
must undergo a great amount of
stress at the time of her first
calving. Add to this the many new
experiences related to moving
into the milking herd and the
result frequently is a frustrated,
excited young animal.
A good way to make this
transition a lot easier, for both
the heifer and the dairyman, is to
introduce the heifer into the herd
2 to 4 weeks before she freshens,
explains Shaffer. This will allow
her to become accustomed to her
herdraates, the feeding schedule,
milking, and other routines
gradually and without the stress
of calving Then after she
freshens, the only new ex
perience will be the actual ap
plication of the milking machine
and she will be much less apt to
rebel over this new experience,
adds Shaffer.
