The DHIA cows averaged 12,965 pounds of milk per cow compared to 8,982 for non-tested cows. Extension dairy specialist Herbert C. Gilmore at The Pennsylvania State University, explains that the extremes in production levels show even greater differences in number of cows needed for $25,000 above feed costs. At the 19,000-pound level, 30 cows are needed while a dairyman needs 111 cows that only produce 7,000 pounds of milk per year. The extra labor and other costs at the lower levels make it impossible to show a profit. There is a large difference in levels of production for individual cows in most herds and only by keeping records can the un profitable ones be culled and greater returns be realized by the dairyman, says Gilmore. Dairymen considering ad ditional sources of income should carefully study the levels of production in their present herd before deciding to increase the number of animals in their herd. It could be more profitable to study feeding and management practices carefully to improve present levels of production, adds Gilmore.
