Ag Research Produces
Concrete Curing Agent
Secretary of Agriculture Earl
L. Butz is a ;ing other Federal
officials of portunities to cut
costs of roau , bridges and other
public anci private concrete
construction offered by a linseed
oil research product.
In letters to the Secretary of
Trahsportation, Secretary of
Housing and Urban Development
(HUD) and Acting Administrator
of General Services, Secretary
Butz recommended linseed oil
emulsion and asked that it be
considered for use by Federal
engineers and architects.
The emulsion was developed by
U,S. Department of Agriculture
(USDA) scientists for curing
fresh concrete and protecting
cured concrete against surface
scaling.
It can save up to $1 a square
yard of new concrete road sur
face in states where concrete
surfaces require protection from
weather and deicing chemicals,
reports William L. Kubie,
chemist of USDA’s Agricultural
Research Service (ARS). Based
upon his studies at ARS’ Nor
thern Regional Research
Laboratory, Peoria, HI., he was
1 granted patents on single
application emulsions of linseed
oil in water and assigned the
patents to the Secretary of
Agriculture.
One application of the emulsion
cures concrete and in addition
protects it two years or more
against surface scaling. Two
distinct operations separated by
14 to 30 days are required for this
double protection in construction
where emulsion curing is not
used.
In letters to the Secretary of
Transportation and Acting Ad
ministrator of General Services,
Secretary Buts called attention to
possible savings in concrete
construction and maintenance in
bridges and highways and on
Federal property. He pointed out
to HUD that improperly cured
concrete can reduce home values

through unsightly interiors or

Referring to concrete in home
building, he wrote, “Lack of good
curing, like loss of the horseshoe
nail, can affect the whole
operation.”
The new linseed oil product has
been used in some states and on
many municipal and industrial
roads, bridges, parking lots and
loading docks. Ten producing
companies have been granted 17
licenses on two USDA patents.
