Over a long period of time, I’ve
read and reread a yellowed piece
of paper which is in fact a
document giving one “George
Miller” power of attorney. To me
it is an interesting piece of paper
from which I’ve finally
deciphered the following story,
but to those concerned it must
have expressed strong emotions.
It seems a Catherine Pythan, in

1792, gave power of attorney to a
certain Peter Ulrich when her
husband, John William, died. He
was to receive the state left by
John Williams parents in “Ober
Ingelheim in the Electorate of
Palentine in Germany then in the
hands of the Reverend William
Kaibel.” Now things get com
plicated as Catherine remarries
Abraham Rieger.
Mary, the daughter of
Catherine, is married to Jacob
Miller and wants to move from
Lancaster County to Greensburg
in Westmoreland County in 1802
and therefore appoints her
father-in-law, George Miller, to
act in her stead. It is hoped that
he will collect her share of her
fathers estate.
Really, I’m surprised that I
could condense four pages of “we
therely make, ordain, nominate,
institute, authorize and appoint in
their stead and place put and
depute George Miller of the
Borough of .Lancaster, aforesaid
yeoman their and each of their
true and lawful attorney, etc.”
into the above story.
This legal document is written
on embossed revenue stamped
paper XXV cents. The first
stamps in the United States were
issued in 1847.

Thinking of olden times, I’m
reminded of how easy we have it
now. This morning I hand
washed a pair of manure-covered
jveralls in a bucket of water. It
had been awhile since 1 tried to
wring out the clumsy things by
hand.
Cindy, my youngest, likes to sit
and shake cream in a jar to make
butter, but I prefer to just flip it
out of the paper wrapped.
There is one thing that hasn’t
changed over the years and that
is putting up posts for my pea
fences. It seems everyone is so
busy planting corn, feeding
calves or writing term papers for
school that they go untended.
I’d best get to it myself.
In the Kitchen
FRENCH ONION SOUP
1 tbsp. butter
13/2l 3 /2 cups onions, thinly sliced
3 cups chicken stock or
beef bouillon (1 cube
per cup)
2 slices French bread
1 tsp. butter
Parmesan cheese
Brown onions in butter
over low flame. Add chicken
stock or bouillon. Simmer for
one-half hour. (It is better if
it stands for several more
hours.) To serve, ladle soup
into earthenware bowls, top
with a thick slice of buttered
French bread and sprinkle
with Parmesan cheese. Place .
under broiler for 3 minutes.
Makes two servings.
