less than two weeks to beat the
entry deadline for the 1973
Eastern Regional Junior Angus
Heifer Show set for July 16 and 17
at Harrisonburg, Virginia.
Entries in the heifer show close
June 1' Dean R. Hurlbut,
director of junior activities for
the American Angus Association
reports. Registration for the
judging contest, held in con
junction with the show begins at
7:30 a.m. July 16, at the
Rockingham County
Fairgrounds. All interested
youngsters 9 to 19 years of age
who are not high school
graduates and 4-H and FFA
teams may compete in the
contest. First prize for the best

team in the FFA and 4-H
divisions is $lOO. Second through
10th prizes are $9O to $lO.. In
addition the high scoring in
dividuals in both divisions will
win $5O through $lO for the first
five places. There will also be
judging classes for adults, but no
cash awards.
Rules for the judging contest
and heifer show are available
from the American Angus
Association, 3201 Frederick, St.
Joseph, Missouri 64501. All room
reservations must be made
through the American Angus
Association.
The grand champion heifer can
receive as much as $B7O in
premium money. First place
110th
Party Staged at
Strasburg Bank
The First National Bank of
Strasburg celebrated its 110th
birthday Friday with cake,
candles and the bank’s original
charter dated 1863. Bank
executives and board members
were on hand to cut the cake and
break out the charter from the
awards in each class are $BO.
Then 25 percent will be added to
the premium money for heifers
enrolled and in the Association’s
A.H.I.R. program and 50 percent
will be added for heifers in
A.H.I.R. and bred and owned by
the exhibitor. This rule applies to
all class premium money. The
Virginia Angus Association will
give $5OO to the grand champion
heifer, plus an additional $250 if
the animal is shown by a Virginia
exhibitor. The reserve grand
champion will receive $250 from
the Virginia Association.
The show will be judged on the
Angus system. Classes will be
broken according to age and
contain no more than 20 head.

The First National Bank of
Strasburg opened its doors for
business in 1863 near their
present location. It is one of the
oldest national banks in Lan
caster County and was issued
charter number 42 under the
National Banking Act of 1863.
The original president was
John F. Herr who opened the
bank with a capital of $lOO,OOO
contributed by 72 stockholders.
Today the bank nears the 50
million dollar mark and has 403
stockholders.
In 1966, the bank moved to its
present location on the square in
Strasburg, Expansion has
resulted in the opening of two
branches, one in Lancaster and
the other in Willow Street. A third
branch will open this summer in
The Buck.
First Patent
The U.S. government is
sued its first patent in 1790,
to Samuel Hopkins of Ver
mont, for a process of mak
ing potash and perlash,
used in soap and glass man
ufacturing.
