Amendment
Is Passed
Legislative leaders Wednesday
promised public hearings soon on
measures to implement the
newly - approved farmland
“Clean and Green” amendment.
The amendment, which allows
enactment of laws to , lower
farmers’ property taxes, was
adopted by a margin of better
than 2-1 in Tuesday’s primary,
with strong support from rural
and urban counties alike.
With about 98 per cent of the
vote in, the count was: 698,085 yes
and 278,219 no.
Rep. H. Francis Kennedy, R-
Butler,"chairman of the House
Agriculture Committee, said the
legislation would need careful
drafting to avoid mistakes in
other states with similar laws.

The amendment is aimed at
halting the sharp increase in
farmers’ property taxes caused
by the encroachment of industry
and housing developments on
rural lands.
In other states, however,
similar laws benefited no one but
land speculators and did little to
stop suburban sprawl.
“We hope to benetit from the
mistakes others have made,”
Kennedy said.
