New Space Retriever Grabs Orbiting Junk
A new satellite retrieval
package has been designed to
capture space pollution out
of orbit. There are about
2,600 objects now orbiting
the earth, cast-off rocket
stages, payloads, adapters,
and satellites that no longer
work, according to Dr. Mar
shall Kaplan of Pennsylvania
State University.
The proposed space pack
age would consist of a huge
metal ring (14 feet across)
attached to a tender bearing
the brains of the retriever,
TV cameras on the tender
would align the retriever with

for docking. Retrieved satel

rockets might be attached to
stop them so they would fall
into the earth's atmosphere
and burn up.
