* ? Fa^ttfe^saupas Public SAT APRIL 28- 9:30 A.M. Public Sale of Real Estate, Farm Machinery. Tools, Household Goods and Antiques of the Late Jacob S Forry Estate located Prepared by the Staff of the National Coordinating Council on Drug Education The biggest obstacle facing the rehabilitated drug addict is finding a job. Gainful em ployment is one of the sine qua nons of the ex-addict’s returning to a productive role in society. A year-long study by the New York State Tem porary Commission to Eval uate the Drug Law disclosed discrimination exists in em ployment of rehabilitated ad dicts. Some corporations, though, and their associations, have been making an effort to pro vide job training for those chronic drug users who have successfully completed detox ification and drug-free ther apy. One such organization is the National Association of Engine and Boat Manufac turers, which has funded the New York City Addiction Service Agency’s “Pioneer Marine School.” At the South Street Sea port Museum rehabilitated addicts undergo six months of intensive training in ma rine repair work aboard the USS William H. Hart. Upon graduation, they are virtu ally assured job placement in the critically undermanned field of marine repair. The first twelve graduates of the program received their diplomas at the National Boat Show this Spring. They were able to choose from among 70 jobs, paying at least $4 an hour. In the words of A. W. MaeKerer, chairman of the NAEBM Marine Service Council, “If we can fill a vital need of our own for service technicians, and at the same time do our part in alleviat ing some of the problems of today’s youth—bringing them into an industry that we feel offers good opportunity and a wholesome way of life—our~ investment in this project will be repaid tenfold.” * * * Music From Muses The word “music” is taken from the name for the daugh ters of Zeus, the Muses, who governed all beauty and har mony in the world, accord ing to Greek mythology. ***** * ANIMAL FREE!
