N.Alanßi AMbtafii County Agricnttui Agent Ask any dairymen across the county what he feels his “big” problem is, and the answer “getting cows settled” will be heard quite often. Few would be the dairymen who would say that getting cows bred back is not important. It’s pretty well documented that it cost you, the dairymen, about 70 cents a cow per day for delays in calving internals past 12 months. If you have a 50 cow herd that has an average delay of one month a cow in calving, you are losing $20.00 a cow or $1,000.00 a year. People close to the A.I. in dustry agree that the most common cause of breeding ‘failure is simply breeding at the wrong time. Proper timing of service depends' upon two important factors: (1) accurate detection of heat and (2) an understanding of the time relationship between heat and ovulation. Heat detection requires time _ and a conviction that breeding ~ efficiency is important enough to justify the effort. It is important that the beginning of standing heat be pin pointed as accurately as possible. Once the beginning of standing heat has been determined, remember these facts when deciding the belt time to breed the animal; 1. The average length of standing heat is 18 hours. 2. The egg is not released until an average of about 12 hours AFTER the end of standing heat. , 3. After the egg is released (ovulation), it remains fertile for about 12 hours. 4. Sperm remains fertile about 24-30 hours following in semination. The natural tendency is to have the cow bred too soon. Remember, in the average cow, the egg is not released until about 30 hours AFTER the onset of (Continued on Page 8} Your Hoffman Seed Man Specializes in Better Paving For higher quality farm seeds ... plus service . . . call your Hoff man Seed Man.
