Fresh Potato Sales Are
Best Marketing Potential
Commonwealth potato growers
will find their greatest future
sales potential in the form of
fresh potatoes, an Extension
agricultural marketing specialist
at The Pennsylvania State
University predicts.
Speaking at the 22nd Penn
sylvania Potato Growers In
stitute on the Penn State campus,
Dr Thomas A Brewer pointed
out that with 12 million people
each eating 40 pounds of potatoes
per year, they would consume
nearly 5 million hundredweight,
or about 75 percent of the level of
total current sales. National per
capita consumption of fresh
potatoes in 1971 was about 59
pounds
“We can’t expect to serve all of
Pennsylvania’s demand for fresh
potatoes but we could serve more
than we have,” the marketing
specialist said
Another large segment of the
potato market—sales to chip
pers—will probably remain fairly
constant even when one considers
population growth, Dr. Brewer
emphasized. In fact, it may
decline as close substitutes are
introduced using potato products
