Seeds for New
Crops Available
Seed should be available this
spring for several new varieties
of crops developed and released
by the Agricultural Experiment
Station at The Pennsylvania
State University. The varieties
are available from commercial
seed producers.
Pa 2944 is a new double cross
field corn hybrid that is superior
in yield and standability to an
older and similar hybrid, Pa 290.
Pa 2944 has good resistance to
yellow leaf blight. It has been
tested for several years in other
states in the Northeast as well as
in Pennsylvania according to Dr.
Melvin W. Johnson, Experiment
Station corn breeder.
Over a period of four years Pa
2944 averaged 124 bushels of
shelled corn per acre compared
to 110 bushels for Pa 212 and 114
bushels for Pa 290 Seed supplies
for this year will be limited.
Pa 8403 is a new three-way field
corn hybrid that grows shorter
and matures earlier than Pa 8703.
Containing normal cytoplasm,
Pa 8403 has good resistance to
yellow leaf blight and to both
northern and southern com leaf
blights
Over three years of testing, Pa
8403 averaged 164 bushels of
shelled corn per acre compared
with 161 bushels for Pa 8703. Seed
supplies will be limited in 1973,
says Dr Johnson
Pa 870SL field corn hybrid, also
new, is a modified version of Pa
870 S. an outstanding single cross
hybrid Pa 870SL resembles Pa

Pa 602 A in silage yield. It is about
the same height as Pa 602 A and
somewhat better in stalk
strength. Pa 604 is competitive
with other hybrids adapted to a
medium long growing season.

for the Experiment Station Seed
Committee, also announces that
limited amounts of Pennstar
Kentucky bluegrass seed will be
available for planting this year.
Seed of another new turfgrass
variety, Pennfine perennial
ryegrass, will be available in
1973.
Adequate seed supplies should
also be available for Pennfield
spring oats and Pennscott red
clover —both recommended
varieties.
