“About three years ago at
tempts were made to obtain
permission for Penn DOT to
approve this type of sign,” said
George F. McCorkle, College of
Agriculture safety officer. “Final
approval was given in October
1972.”
In addition to Mr. McCorkle,
others who assisted in technical
matters were Mr. Howard 0.
Tnebold, Jr., manager of the
University’s Safety Division; Mr.
John A Lucas, College of
Agriculture adminstrative
services assistant; and Mr.
Bruce E. Speagle and Mr. David
E Zazworsky, of Penn DOT.
Three road signs will initially
be placed on each pole, the safety
officer points out. The top sign
will depict a person driving a
tractor. This is the “International
Road Sign” and will become
widely adopted.
The middle sign consists of the
wording “Farm Machinery” and
will be removed when motorists
become familiar with the
meaning of the “International
Road Sign.” The third or bottom
sign will designate the distance in
miles the farm machinery hazard
extends along the highway.
Signs to be erected along Route
45 at the Rock Springs Research
;Center were fabricated at the
University Sign Shop from
sketches furnished by PennDOT.
In order tp put up a sign of this
type, a permit must be obtained
from the Pennsylvania Depart
ment of Transportation.
Officials of The Pennsylvania State University College of
Agriculture who initiated the development of a new farm
machinery warning road sign are John A. Lucas, ad
ministrative services assistant; and George F. McCorkle,
safety officer.
