Conserve Fuel
The Chester County
Cooperative Extension Service
offers the following homemaker’s
hints to save heat and conserve
fuel:
-Check insulation in the house -
start at the top and work down.
Patch cracks or crevices. Put 4
inch thick insulation batting
between rafters in the attic or
tack inside the roof.
- Check for drafts from win
dows and doors. Caulk cracks
and around window glass. Felt
strips can be used to seal some
gaps.
- Put up storm windows and
doors. If you don’t have these, use
plastic kits and sheeting to
provide insulation.
- Keep damper in fireplace
closed when no fire is going.
- Keep radiators, grills, heat
vents and registers free of ob
struction.
- Wrap insluation around bare
pipes or ducts which run through
unheated spaces.

- Consider a humidifier if you
don’t have one. It makes air more
comfortable at lower tem
peratures, thus saves fuel. Moist
air is kinder to your respiratory
system than dry air. It is better
for wood furniture as well.
- Be sure the furnace is in good
working order.
- To feel warm in a cool house
wear layers of clothing to in
sulate the body. Three layers
give good insulation - such as
undershirt, blouse and sweater or
two pairs of socks plus shoes.
- Close the gaps in clothing -
wear long undershirt. Pants or
slacks are warmer than skirts.
- Bedding is warmer if put on in
layers and tucked in well on the
bottom and sides.
