New Program Helps Veterans
Pay for College Education
Pennsylvania’s new program
to help veterans to pay for college
or other postesecondary
education is now in operation
Known as the Veterans
Education Act, the program is
designed to more readily provide
scholarship grants to ex
servicemen who wish to attend
colleges or universities, or
business, trade or nursing
schools, either in the state or at
out-of-state institutions The
program is under the ad
ministration of the Pennsylvania
Higher Education Assistance
Agency
The Veterans Education Act
was approved by the Legislature
last fall and signed into law by
Governor Shapp on Oct 11, 1972
The act carried an appropriation
of $1 4 million for the current
scholastic year
Kenneth R Rceher. executive
director of PHEAA which ad
ministers the state’s programs of
student aid for education, said,
“about 9 000 veterans currently
arc receiving scholaiship aid
from the Commonwealth through
the regular State Scholarship
Program Of these, about 1,000
may be eligible for added
assistance under the Veterans
Education Act ”
Eligibility in the new program
especially geared to veterans by
the General Assembly, is based
on the veteran’s compliance with
all requirements and need for
financial assistance based on
personal financial data
Maximum academic year
awards are $1,200 at a Penn
sylvania institution or $BOO at an
out-of-state school, but not to
exceed tuition and fees in either
instance
PHEAA has been in close
contact with veterans groups in

provides that veterans may be
processed as financially in
dependent if, in fact, they are not
receiving support from their
parents. Veterans are qualified if
they have served 180 days or
more on active duty and part of
that service was after Jan. 31,
1955. The veteran must have been
a domiciliary of Pennsylvania for
12 months immediately prior to
service on active duty, and must
have maintained a domicile in
Pennsylvania since his release or
discharge.
A veteran for the current year
could have been considered for
and received an award for the
first half of the year under the
basic state scholarship program
and a second-half-year award
under the Veterans Education
Act program. In no case,
however, could the veteran
qualify for awards under both
programs simultaneously or
have a reduction in his existing
National Association of Manufacturers award
an effort to try to reach ex
service people so as to inform
them about the new program.

Which type coffee maker
makes the best coffee?
According to coffee ex
perts, the most important
factors for a cup of good cof
fee are proper grind, accurate
measurements of coffee and
water, correct timing and a
clean coffee maker. Respect
these factors and you can
make good coffee in any type
of coffee maker.
Why haven’t manufacturers
of coffee maket s standai dized
b> ewing time for coffee ?
There are three distinctly
different ways to make coffee
and each method has its own
best brewing time. For perco
lated coffee 6-8 minutes is
considered adequate. For
drip coffee 4-6 minutes and
for vacuum type coffee
makers 1-4 minutes.
Some coffee makers indicate
water level fot making a spe
cific numb er of cups (6,8,10).
What size cups are used for
this measurement?
The beverage industries—
tea and coffee—have gener
ally used 5Vz ounces as the
standard serving cup for
measurements on coffee
makers. A 10-cup percolator
makes ten 5% ounce servings
of coffee. Most coffee cups
have a capacity of 7-8 ounces
which leaves room for sugar,
cream and stirring.
If you were to buy an auto
matic washing machine,
which would you choose, a
top or front loading model?
Both types do a good job
of getting clothes clean. The
space you have available is
an important consideiation.
If there are wall cabinets or
shelves above the appliance,
be sure the washer lid has
enough clearance. If not, the
front opening model should
be considered.
