24—Lancaster Fanning, Saturday, February 3, 1973 :•![ a Mrs. Evelyn Hess . . * School Bus Driver, Community Leader, Housewife Mrs J Robert (Evelyn) Hess, Banker Hill Road, Strasburg Township, is an active com munity leader, a school bus driver, a farmer’s wife and busy homemaker Hesses live on “Moo-Haven Farm”, near the Strasburg Township Building They have a registered Holstein dairy herd of 38 cows and 40 heifers which they have developed from heifers they kept when they had a dispersal sale of their fine dairy herd m 1967 They bought this 52 acre farm in 1962 from Robert’s father, Elvin, who had purchased it in 1952 They also own some other ground on Hartman’s Bridge Road and rent some so they have 122 acres they farm They grow corn, hay and some wheat For the past six years J Robert has been a partner in the Kingsway Realty Company of 49 E King Street, Lancaster, having passed his salesman test five years ago and his broker’s test a year ago He really enjoys selling real estate and meeting people However, he oversees the farm operation and helps on the farm as well Richard Becker, who lives in Strasburg is their full time employee and the whole Hess family is a part of the operation Mrs Hess, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs J Clayton Sangrey, Warwick Township, was born in Manheim Township but grew up on a general farm near Lititz which her parents bought when she was nine years old. They had a dairy, raised steers and grew tobacco The Sangreys, having three daughters but no sons, had a hired man who helped with the dairy and steers but Evelyn helped with the tobacco. Her farm background was helpful to her after she was married. For 15 years she helped milk mornings and evenings, worked with their laying hens, helped plant Mrs. Hess drives this school bus to transport Lampeter- Strasburg High School and Strasburg Elementary students. Farm Feature Writer Mrs. Charles McSparran tobacco, plowed, moved and raked hay and did many other farm chores They now have a garden and grow green beans, lima beans and corn which Evelyn freezes She graduated from Warwick High School While she was a senior in high school she took a job as secretary and chair side assistant to a dentist in Lititz and worked there for two years Evelyn keeps all the farm books and records for their houses and apartments in Lan caster and Strasburg and gets them ready for the accountant to figure income tax Mrs Hess has been driving a Lampeter-Strasburg school bus for Harold and Lester Warfel for six years She hauls high school students to school and on the way back brings children to the Strasburg Elementary School. It takes about three hours a day. Her husband drove a bus before he sold real estate. Evelyn was appointed to the Farm & Home Foundation Board two years ago to fill an unexpired term and was elected to the board last year for a three year term. She was elected secretary of the board last year The board meets the second Tuesday of each month There are 21 directors on the board and 5 advisors. It is a well rounded board representing education, industry and farmers from rural and suburban areas. The advisors are Senator Richard Snyder, Mayor Mrs. J. Robert Hess, Strasburg R.D.I, are u sed at their meetings. Her daughter looks over her Farm Women Society books Debbie's picture as reigning Lampeter Fair and program booklet. The Farm Women Queen is also in the background, and the American flags in the background Monaghan, William Snavely, M.M Smith and Pharos Risser. Melvin Stoltzfus is president. They gave ten scholarships this year to students in agricultural related or home economics fields. They held three educational meetings apd sponsored an an tique show and a slave auction to make money. The Farm and Home Center at 1383 Arcadia Road is a very versatile building and meets a great need in the county. Mrs. Hess is serving her second year as president of Farm Women Society 28. She was a charter member of this society which organized five years ago. They have 30 members and meet in their homes once a month in the evenings. Their members are mostly young women. Mrs. Hess attended the State Farm Women’s convention in January and took part in the safety en tertainment put on by Lancaster County. Their Society gave $5O to LARC, the Farm Women county project, and also gave donations to the American Cancer Society and the Heart Association. They had a party for the children at Christ’s Home, gave them gifts and the children put on a program for the society. They entertained 27 patients in the psychiatric ward of the General Hospital, Lancaster. They will pack food baskets for needy families at Thanksgiving time. They plan events to include their husbands such as a Christmas banquet. Last year they had Mrs. James Herr of the Herr’s Potato Chip firm as a speaker for their banquet. They had a white elephant sale and a sub sale this year to make money. They will have a food stand at a farm sale soon and 75 percent of that profit will go to a worthy charity. Some programs they have planned for their meetings this year are a demonstration on yeast baking and another one on making an arrangement in a frame, a program on self im provement put on by Elaine’s School Of Charm, a lawyer to speak on wills and they will play miniature golf next summer. Evelyn is a Republican Committee Woman for Strasburg Township. It is her duty to get the voters out to the polls, check on new people moving into the township and to get 18 year old residents to register. The com mitteemen and com mitteewomen of the Lampeter and Strasburg Townships and Strasburg Borough meet together and she is their secretary. Mrs. Hess has been a 4-H Leader for ten years. She started the Lampeter-Strasburg Merrimaids 4-H Cooking Club and four years later started their sewing club. They now have 50 girls in the combined clubs. She is their organizational leader and keeps the books. They have five other leaders. The girls have an orgainzational meeting in May then have from six to eight work meetings in the summer. They have a fashion show and a tea for their mothers in the fall and the girls model the garments they make. Mrs. Hess helps with the cooking club. Evelyn is on the school Teacher-Parent Council. Two parents from each class are on the council. They meet three times a year to discuss problems. Mrs. Hess served as a director of the Lancaster County Ex tension Association several years and served as secretary for awhile. Hesses are members of Neff sville Mennonite Church where Mrs. Hess teaches a Sunday School class sometimes and taught at the Daily Vacation Bible School. Robert just finished serving as head usher for the past four years. J. Robert, better known as Bob, is a director of the Lehigh Valley (Continued on Page 27)
