County Planning Commission Adopts Conservation Measure In a recent meeting of the Lancaster County Planning Commission, a memorandum of understanding was adopted in which the planning commission said it will pass some sub-division plans onto the U.S. Conservation Service for their review and comments. The planners took no action on a request from the Lancaster County Conservation Distiict that regulations for avoiding runoff on construction sites be incorporated into the subdivison regulations. It was the feeling of the planners that such guidelines could best be established where building permits are obtained, on the local level. Elizabethtown and Millersville - you’ll find that they ’re adding about $4O million a year to Lancaster County’s economy ” On the future of the county, Lyons said that things would have to change just to stay the same If attempts aren’t made to channel growth in the proper directions, he said, then the county would decline “If Lancaster County had different leadership, we might be another Atlanta, Georgia We might have a city of 250,000 in stead of a county of 300,000 I think, though, that the movers and shakers of Lancaster County like things the way they are ” Lyons did point out that many communities have grown too last for their own good “The problem is to achieve good economic growth without getting urban ulcers We don’t want to become another Newark Under present cOllUlllOils, tlltll is a possibility that the county won’t keep up with the economic growth of the rest of the country, and maybe that’s not all bad It could mean that this will be a nicer place to live than the rest of the country ” Asked if he felt economic growth could occur without sacrificing the county’s limited farmland, Lyons said he didn't feel farmland was especially limited “1 can still get lost in Lancaster County,” he said “No matter what happens, it’ll be a long time before all the farms are gone ” 7
