Business Expenses Tax
In computing income tax
deductions, one area in which
there is widespread misun
derstanding is unreimbursed
business expenses, according to
the Pennsylvania Institute of
Certified Public Accountants.
Many taxpayers, say the
CPA’s, overlook valid business
deductions entirely, while others
have an exaggerated idea of what
is deductible.
It is not just businessmen who
are effected. People in almost
any line of work can incur ex
penses simply to hold their jobs.
Among these are dues paid to a
union or professional society,
subscriptions to techincal
publications, tools, and uniforms
or special work clothes worn only
on the job Such items are usually
deductible The cost of com
muting to and from the job are

Educational or training courses
taken in order to stay abreast of
recent developments in one’s line
or to enhance skills may be
deductible, but only if they are
needed to retain present salary or
employment status. If the course
DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH MILK
YOUR COWS CAN REALLY GIVE?
A cow is a factory. She eats grass, hay, silage,
grain and Wayne Feeds. She makes milk. Each
cow-factory has a certain bred-in capacity. When
Bossy’s assembly line isn't running at full ca
pacity, she isn’t making as much money for you
as she should. ■ The way to find out if she’s
really running at full capacity is to put more
feed in and see if you get more milk out. FEED
HER ACCORDING TO WHAT SHE COULD GIVE
TOMORROW, instead of what she gave yester
day. ■ Wayne can show you how to balance these
larger feed intakes so that your cows can handle
them. You feed the rumen bacteria too, so they
can work harder and digest more roughage. ■ See

If the nature of one’s work
requires an office or other work
area in the home, a percentage of
household maintenance costs and
depreciation may be deductible.
The percentage is usually based
on the ratio of floor space or
number of rooms used for
business to the total floor space
or number of rooms in the
residence.
This ratio applies only if the
area is used exclusively for
business. If the space is used for
business only a part of the time,
the deduction must be reduced
accordingly
Deductions for business en
tertainment are closely watched
by the Internal Revenue Service,
the CPAs advise. Business lun
ches with customers or valuable
contacts are not as likely to be
questioned as are dinner parties,
sports events, fishing trips and
other forms of entertainment. If
there is more than just a meal
and conversation, it is necessary
that business be discussed

Deductible
tertainment
The presence at such affairs of
non-business friends other than
wives increases the likelihood
that the deduction will be
questioned.
If a taxpayer plans to take a
deduction for a trip that was
partly for business and partly for
pleasure, he must be ready to
prove that it was not just a
vacation in disguise. Evidence of
attendance at meetings or con
vention sessions or of calls on
business contacts must show that
most of the time was spent on
such activities and not on golf or
sightseeing.
All personal deductions for
unreimbursed business expenses
are likely to be questioned or
disallowed if the taxpayer is a
principal in a closely-held
business firm. The IRS position in
such cases, reports the CPA
Institute, is that if the expense
was necessary to a company in
which the taxpayer is a boss, he
has the power and the obligation
to have the company reimburse
him.

Winter injury in strawberries
appeared rather widespread
throughout Pennsylvania this
past season. Minimize crown
injury this year by checking your
strawberry bed for the following:
Inadequate Mulch Cover - the
settled mulch should be 3 to 4
inches thick and loose enough so
that it will not mat (or pack) and
smother plants. Add more mulch

Hopper mouth accepts all three types of Big
Dutchman take-off boots for Flex-Vey flexible
auger system; Stor-Vey chain conveyor; or solid
core 4-mch auger.
The large 22 Vz inch diameter opening in the
hopper allows complete, free passage of feed to
the take-off boot and delivery system. A 67-
degree center-draw reduces bridging, keeps
feed flowing down evenly.
if necessary.
Exposed areas - any exposed
plants should be recovered with
mulch; wind breaks or snow
fences should be erected where
wind exposure is especially
severe. Crown injury can be
expected where plantings have
been improperly mulched and
exposed to wind; or where over
supplied with nitrogen and
moisture after jpid-September.
