Aaron Stauffer, Ephrata, was one of the
guests at a ceremony during which
Governor Shapp signed into law a bill
broadening the responsibilities of Penn
sylvania’s conservation districts. Stauffer,

District Directors. Governor Shapp is in

The Lancaster County Soil and
Water Conservation District is
changing its name House Bill
1487 passed by the legislature
during the last hours of its recent
session and signed by Governor
Shapp on December 28, 1972
amended the basic Soil Con
servation Law for the State of
Pennsylvania to shorten the
name to Lancaster County
Conservation District and to
broaden the scope of respon
sibility The new law provides for
increased urban membership on
the conservation district’s board
of directors when conditions
lustify the action The district’s
program of conservation is
broadened to include soil, water
and related resources
More Duties
Conservation districts are
supervised by the State Soil and
Water Conservation Commission,
now the State Conservation
Commission, operating through
the newly created Department of
Enviornmental Resources. The
State Conservation Commission
is primarily responsible for
creating and assisting county
conservation districts. With the
establishment of the Forest
County Conservation District on
November 14,1972, all counties in
the Commonwealth, with the
exception of Philadelphia, have
been designated districts. Other
Commonwealth responsibilities
include soil survey assistance,
flood control and watershed
protection, soil erosion and

Aaron Stauffer, chairman of
the Lancaster County Con
servation District and president
of the State society is confident
that the new law will improve the
district’s program, allow for total
representation of the community
and provide a greater range of
resource conservation benefits to
district. With the emphasis on the
protection of our environment
and the concern shown
throughout the district, Stauffer
invites respresentatives of
organizations and agencies as
well as individuals to meet with
the board of directors to voice
their problems and jointly to seek
solutions. The regular meeting of
the district board is held on the
first Wednesday of each month at
Farm & Home Center starting at
7-30 p m.

USDA Advocates
Cutback in Broilers
To avoid depressed broiler
prices in the second quarter of
1973, the U.S. Department of
Agriculture (USDA) recom
mends that the broiler industry
reduce production during that
period by 5 percent from year
earlier levels. USDA makes the
exception, however, that there be
a 10-percent reduction for Easter
week to compensate for the
customary seasonal decline in
demand at that time.
USDA also recommends that
pullet chick placements for the
broiler hatchery supply flock be
adjusted to supply the same
number of broiler chicks as a
year earlier when these pullets
come into lay in late 1973.
These recommendations
which are contained
in the “Broiler Marketing
Guide for Second Quarter 1973” —
are made to assist the industry in
adjusting output to meet an
ticipated higher production and
marketing costs in that period,
and to adjust to stronger com
petition from red meats—pork in
particular—later in the year.
