uses in the hands of Pennsylvania
growers, local dealers and

Total stocks held on January 1,
1973 amounted to 41 percent of
production, while one year ago
they accounted for 42 percent of
production The 1972 crop of
4,800,000 cwt was 39 percent
below the 7,810,000 cwt produced
in 1971
Disappearance (sales, home
use, shrinkage, etc ) to January 1
from time of harvest was
2.850.000 cwt compared with
4.510.000 cwt. for the comparable
period a year earlier
Nationally, storage stocks of
Irish potatoes for all uses held by
growers, local dealers, and
processors in fall production
areas totaled 132 8 million cwt on
January 1, 1973. This is 12 per
cent, 18 6 million cwt., less than
the 151 4 million cwt on hand a
year earlier for all uses, and 17 2

Stocks in the eight Eastern
States on January 1, 1973 totaled
27 4 million cwt., 10.6 million, 28
percent, less than the 38.0
million cwt. on hand a year
earlier Maine supplies of 21.5
million cwt. were 23 percent less
than the 27.9 million cwt. on hand
a year earlier, reflecting the
continued rapid use of the
smaller 1972 production for that
State Stocks on January 1 this
year in Upstate and Long Island,
New York, and Pennsylvania
also were below year-earlier
levels.
For the eight Central States
January 1 potato stocks of 26.7
million cwt. were 7.4 million cwt.,
22 percent, less than a year
earlier North Dakota stocks of
10 1 million cwt. compare with
12 5 million a year ago and
Minnesota, with 7.5 million this
year, was down from 10 5 million
cwt a year ago. Declines from a
year ago also were recorded for
other Central States.
Stocks in the eight Western
States totaled 78.7 million cwt., 1
percent less than the 79.3 million

Two registered Guernsey cows
in the herd of Raymond F. and
Louise A. Witmer, Willow Street,
recently completed top official
DHIR actual production records,
according to The American
Guernsey Cattle Club.
Penn Del Flash Maisy, a two
year-old, produced 11,990 pounds
of milk and 561 pounds of fat in
305 days Penn Del Flash Grace,
a four-year-old, produced 14,430
pounds of milk and 717 pounds of
butterfat in 305 days.
All cows were milked twice
daily. Testing was supervised by
Penn State University.
stocks of 49.5 million were
slightly higher than a year
earlier at 49.0 million, while
Washington, with 13.4 million this
year, was slightly less than a
year ago at 13.5 million. Stocks
were less than a year earlier in
Colorado, Oregon, and Califor
nia
Disappearance from the 1972
fall crop production of 234.1
million cwt to the January 1,1973
stocks level totaled 101.3 million
cwt, slightly less than the 102.4
million cwt. for the comparable
period a year earlier.
Use of potatoes from the 1972
crop for processing to January 1,
1973 in Maine, Idaho, Washington
(late summer and fall crops),
Oregon, Michigan, Minnesota,
and North Dakota totaled 41.7
million cwt, compared with 39.7
million cwt. for the correspon
ding period a year ago.
Sales of fall potatoes for all
purposes—including fresh
market, processing, seed, and
livestock feed —generally ac
count for about 88 percent of the
fall crop with the balance used on
farms where grown or lost
through shrinkage and waste.
