Second high lactation was completed by a Registered Holstein cow owned by Lloyd Wolf, Quarryville RD2. Jackie produced 21,563 pounds of milk, 926 pounds of butterfat with a 4 3 per cent test in 305 days The herd of Curtis E. Akers, Quarryville RDI, had the highest daily butterfat average. This herd of 57.7 Registered and Grade Holstein cows averaged 50.3 pounds of milk, 2.02 pounds of butterfat with a 4.0 per cent test The herd of John P. Lapp, Leola RDI, placed second. Alan Bair, Assistant County - Agricultural i 1 Agent *-f\ Dairy Situation The rapidly rising and ex tremely unstable feed market in our Lancaster County area is certainly not a very welcome situation. The price of protein feeds is changing drastically from day to day. As anyone knows who watches the local hay market, the price of this rather necessary dairy feed is setting some all-time record highs. On the other side of the milk bucket, the USDA reports for the first time since 1955 the per capita, as well as the total milk consumption, is increasing. Each person in the U.S. will probably consume an average 562 pounds of milk in all dairy products in 1972, up one per cent from last year’s level. It is reported that in the Philadelphia area Class I sales are up. Other areas with strong promotion programs are also reporting increases in Class I sales, plus a big increase in cheese sales. As a local dairyman, how do these two situations affect you? The solution to this question can only be answered by you. The price of protein is almost out of your control since this is a national and world situation.
