Heifers were mostly 2.00 higher. Cows 1.00-1.50 higher, bulls fully 50c higher. Fleshy feeder steers 1.00-1.25 higher. Four day receipts 16,600 as compared with 17,000 previous week and 19,900 a year ago. Slaughter steers approximately 42 percent, heifers 40 percent, cows 9 percent, and feeders 6 percent. A sharp upward trend in wholesale carcass prices which initially began late the previous week coupled with moderate marketings to trigger a sharp price advance in live trading. Supplies quite well distributed over period and most interests entered week in need of cattle for immediate slaughter requirements. Good demand for Choice 1000-1100 pounds 5334 yield grade 2-3 for Canadian shipment and feeder buyers again aggressive for fleshy 950-1025 pound steers suitable for a short turn in the feedlot. Broad demand partially offset the sharp price discrimination on strong weight steers which have been most prevalent the past few weeks. Mud continued to be much in evidence.
