The Harvest and There was something for everyone at the Town and Country Garden Club’s 1972 Standard Flower Show held last weekend at the Farm and Home Center. “The Harvest and the Holly” was the theme, and exhibitors used a great variety of plant material to create unusual, ar tistic arrangements in keeping with the programs promise of a kaleidoscope of beauty. The show featured the “colors of harvest, the joys of Christmas and the excitement of the New Year.” The Educational Award was given to an exhibit on the making of honey, prepared by 4-H members under the supervision of Arnold G. Lueck, associate county agent. Silver awards for educational exhibits were won by Mrs. Richard Sellers for a display on holiday wreaths and by the Conservation Committee for their display, “Hospitality for the Birds.” The Sweepstakes Award went to Mrs. William Ulrich for ac cumulating the most points in artistic and horticultural categories. Other top honors went to; Mrs. Jay Oberholtzer, Award of Distinction; Mrs. Curtis Amidon, Award of Merit; Mrs. William Ulrich, Arboreal Award; Mr and Mrs. S.A. Shoemaker, appreciation and Mrs. James Falk, Special Award. They won first prize in the “Lights Aglow” division. “The First Thanksgiving” is interpreted by Carol Landis who won second place. This exhibit is part of the Seedlings division, open to children from first through ninth grade. Adamire and special recognition award went to Mrs. Charles Hanlon. An important part of the show was the junior flower show by the Seedlings, which won the Junior Flower Show Award. Mem bership in “Seedlings” is for children from first through the ninth grade. Three junior achievement awards were given: artistic, Robert Heisley; horticulture, Julie Spencer; educational, “Along the Nature Trail.” There were 25 categories for adult competition and 13 in the junior division. Co-chairmen for the show were Mrs. Gordon Barr and Mrs. Richard Tomlinson. Judges were Mrs. Frank P. Fonsielle, Mrs. Walter M. Kilgore, Mrs. Harry D. Daughtery, Mrs. Richard L. Schenck, Mrs. James W. Parish, Mrs. Elmer Warner, Mrs. John E. Romig, Mrs. A.C. Troup, Mrs. F. Weaver, Mrs. Kenneth E. Waters, Mrs. Russell G. Williams, Mrs. Paul E. Behler, Mrs. J. Thomas Carman, Mrs. A. Douglas Thompson and Mrs. R.F. Patton. The show was the sixth for the Town and Country Garden Club since its affilitation with the National Council of State Garden Clubs. Twice the club has received purple rosettes for its shows, the highest award in the state. The Club has also won the Governor’s Trophy, a Silver Bowl award for having the most and best in the state for all club ac tivities. The Holly s CP 1 Mrs. Jay R. Oberholtzer won the Award of Distinction with this entry in the “Hi-Ho, The Harvest” category. The display had to consist of all dried material to be eligible for this award. The accompanying caption read: “God said, 'Let the seed produce fruit after its kind, and it was so.'
