Agriculture Must
Tell its Own Story
The American public holds
some misconceptions about the
food and fiber industry, and the
producers of food and fiber
probably have some miscon
ceptions about consumers
thebe are the remarks of
Sherwood O Berg of the Institute
of Agriculture, University of
Minnesota, in speaking about the
need for better communication at
the annual meetings of the
American Society of Agronomy
Berg feels that agriculture can
be made understandable through
a well-balanced exposition
containing all the major com
ponents of the food and fiber
chain “We must talk about the
great productivity of American
agriculture, how that produc
tivity was reached, and what it
has cost us,” he says
Berg also feels that the public
must get some understanding of
the scope and general nature of
the food and fiber business from
input through production and
distribution to the retail store
The impact of science, the
changes in world and domestic
markets, and reorganization of
business must all be laid out as
well as a consideration of the
society and economic im
plications of changes in
agriculture
“But,” Berg says, “com
munication involves more than
clarifying facts To command
public response, agribusiness,
and more especially educators in
agriculture, must be concerned
about proverty, pollution, and
nutrition as the people leel these
problems This concern must be
translated ultimately into public
policy ”
