Eggmen
(Continued From Page 1)
of Egg Clearinghouse, Inc.; Dr.
Anthony Stemberger, professor
of agricultural economics at
Penn State and a member of
ECl’s egg pricing research
committee.
Pickier postulated that the
correct egg price is the highest
price that will move the existing
supply of eggs.
A producer in the audience took
exception to this definition,
saying that the correct price
should be one which will
guarantee a profit to the
producer. “The packers, the
brokers and the retailers have
the producer on the bottom all
take their profits from the top,
and the producers get what’s left
over,” he said. “We ought to start
figuring egg prices from
production costs.”
Pickier said there was no way
to guarantee the cost of
production in a free market. He
said that if producers produce too
many eggs, then the prices will
go down There seemed to be a
general consensus among the
resource people, in fact, that
limiting production was the only
real way to control egg prices.
Determining exactly what the
egg price is came in for a lot of
discussion at the meeting. Nest
run eggs is one of the most im
portant concepts developed
recently in this area, Pickier
said
The problems and the promise
of Egg Clearinghouse, Inc (ECI)
were discussed at length by
Stemberger and Pickier They
said that ECI could become an
important element in the egg
price discovery system, but only
if egg dealers use its facilities as
a part of their normal operations
