Chill one baked 9-inch pie shell in the freezer. Spoon one quart of softened vanilla ice cream evenly into the bottom of the crust. Return to the freezer to harden. In a small bowl, mix together 1 cup pumpkin, % cup sugar, % teaspoon pumpkin pie spice, and Vz teaspoon salt. Fold in 1 cup of whipped whipping cream. Spread over the ice cream layer.
