Of course you expect a
range to heat food and a re
frigerator to keep it cool. But
do you know that basic home
appliances can perform other
duties as well? To help you
get the most from your appli
ances, General Electric’s Con
sumer Institute has the fol
lowing suggestions:
• If your automatic dish
washer doesn’t have a “plate
warmer’’ setting you can get
the same result by advancing
the cycle selector past the
wash cycles to the dry portion
of the cycle.
• For a cup of coffee the
first thing in the morning,
use the timed outlet on your
range. Plug the coffee-maker
in at night and set the timer
for your AM coffee.
• If you have a large food
freezer, try freezing meats
and poultry in meal-size pack
ages. Then you won't have to
thaw more than you need
Once you thaw meat, it should
never be refrozen, but you
Here’s a cool harvest-time
treat that’ll put frost on your
pumpkin... Frozen Pumpkin Pie.
Chill one baked 9-inch pie shell in
the freezer. Spoon one quart of
softened vanilla ice cream evenly
into the bottom of the crust.
Return to the freezer to harden.
In a small bowl, mix together 1
cup pumpkin, % cup sugar, %
teaspoon pumpkin pie spice, and
Vz teaspoon salt. Fold in 1 cup of
whipped whipping cream. Spread
over the ice cream layer. Then

can cook it, and then freeze it
for use at a later date.
• Automatic washing ma
chines are great for bright
ening up your home. They
make it easy to tint your
clothes, curtains, bedspreads,
etc. Just remember to wash
the material first and tint it
while wet. Use the hottest
water possible and dissolve
the dye before adding the
items. The material will not
be colorfast, however, so al
ways wash it separately
thereafter.
• Try tumbling the wrinkles
out of garments by placing
them in the no-heat fluff set
ting of a dryer. Saves time
and professional pressing
costs.
• To keep your waste dis
poser sanitary and its cutting
blades sharp, feed it an occa
sional tray of ice cubes. Bones
will do the trick, too, unless
a canine companion has first
priority.
