Few Differences in
In a comparison of rapeseed
meal and sunflower meal with
soybean meal as supplements for
dairy calf starters at South
Dakota State University, there
was no significant difference in
terms of calf performance at the
end of the trial. However, the
rapeseed meal did present a
slight palatability problem,
especially in the early stages of
the feeding period
Starter dry matter intake was
significantly lower for the
rapeseed meal at the end of the
first eight weeks (31 kg) com
pared to 52 kg for sunflower

meal and .58 kg for the soybean
meal. The hay intake was
significantly lower for the calves
on sunflower meal (.22kg)
compared to .31-.32 for the other
types of meal. However, by the
end of the feeding trial the dry
matter intake was 1.79 kg per day
for rapeseed meal; 1.88 kg. for
sunflower seed meal and 1.97 for
the soybean meal. Sunflower
meal was the least digestible of
the three except in crude protein
where all three were about equal.
Keep closets, dresser
drawers, basements, any
place where mildew is likely
to grow, as clean as possible.
Soil on articles can supply
sufficient food for mildew to
start growing when moisture
and temperature are right.
Greasy films, such as those
that form on kitchen walls,
also contain many nutrients
for mildew organisms.
Thorough cleaning of all
soiled fabrics, regardless of
the kind of fiber in them,
may help prevent them from
mildewing.

Silo Filling -
Do it Fast,
Seal Tight
A farmers motto at silo filling
time should be: Fill them fast
and seal them tight. When silos
are filled at a rate of only five feet
per day, the spoilage is about 1
per cent more per day than when
the silo was filled in one day.
Smaller silos, which can be
filled faster, will have lower
losses than larger silos, which
are filled more slowly. Here’s an
example. Two 250-ton silos could
be filled in four days each, while
one 500-ton silo would require
eight days for filling with the
same equipment. You could
expect about 40 tons spoilage in
the large silo and about 10 tons in
each of the small ones for a total
of 20 tons. The difference of 20
tons of silage valued at $8 per ton
would mean $l6O more loss from
the larger silo.
