The Pennsylvania Junior Dairy
Show was the opening event in
the Ninth Annual All-American
Dairy Show which ran through
Friday, September 29, at the
Farm Show.
The junior show is much older
than its host and it appears to be
thriving in the same fashion as
the dairy industry in the Com
monwealth. This 17th edition of
the Pa. Junior Dairy Show
produced a record of 711 entries.
In a change of format only the
Holstein judging conducted
separate shows for 4-H and FFA
members. Membership in these
two rural youth organizations is a
prerequisite to showing in the Jr.
Dairy Show. All contestants must
also have won at least blue rib
bons at county and district shows
to qualify for today’s judging.
A Lancaster County FFA
member was grand champion
among the Brown Swiss entrants.
17-year-old Donald Wenger,
Manheim R.D. 2, tallied with
seven-year-old “Lori’s Kay.” The
reserve grand champion, “High
Pines Stretchy Orchid,” was
back as a two-year-old. Last
year, John C. Rhodes, 19,
Alexandria, Huntingdon County
got the reserve junior champion
ribbon when “Orchid” was a
heifer.
An 18-year-old Cornell
University freshman from
Northampton County won the
grand champion Holstein title for
4-H members. Donald A. Seipt,
Easton R.D. 4, scored with his
two-year-old cow, “Keystone
Sparkling Joyous.” A seven-year
old cow, “Fern-Spring Blossom
Pat.” was reserve grand
champion. The runner-up belongs
to 15-year-old William G. But
termore, Mt. Pleasant R.D. 3,
Westmoreland County. The
junior champion was shown by
Susan Weaver of Glen More,
Chester County.
In the FFA division, per
serverance made a winner out of
a Bedford County youth. 17-year
old Wayne Ritchy, Hopewell R.D.
1, returned with his three-year
old cow “Willa Ede Sensation
Tiny” to take the grand cham
pionship. Last year the com-

settled for the reserve grand
champion. A five-year-old cow,
“Sunny Craft Roda Ivanhoe,”
shown by Earl C. Stauffer, 20,
Ephrata R.D. 1, Lancaster
County, took reserve honors this
year. Paul Horning, Stevens Rl,
took the junior champion honors,
while Donald Weidman, Lebanon
Rl, showed the reserve junior
champion.
Family combinations were the
highlight of two of the other breed
shows. The Yoder Brothers
Samuel and Frederick finished
one-two in the Milking Shor
thorns. 14-year-old Sam, reserve
grand champion last year, was
back with a different cow, two
year-old “Pinesedge K. Rose
4th,” and grabbed the grand
championship. His 12-year-old
brother took reserve honors with
a six-year-old cow, “Pinesedge
Irma Irene.”
It was brother and sister in the
Ayrshires Kennard E. Henley,
111, Cochranville R.D. 1, repeated
as grand champion with his
seven-year-old cow, “Androssan
GLR Minerva.” Sharon Lynn, 14,
